Caroli FroshLose3 Players; Play Here Tonight By DAN DONOVAN Earl Dunham, freshman basket ball coach, has started the spring semester of school without the aid of three previous first rate play ers. The starting three have dropped out of school. Bob Byrd, Dick Gleichman and Joe Dunlap have failed to enroll for the spring semester. Byrd, 6 foot, 11 inch star center from Flat Creek was the spark plug of the team in its previous games. He had averaged about 15 points for the seven games that he played in. Gleichman was the starting guard with Allan Cox and Joe Dunlap was one. of Dunham's top notch reserves. The freshman team began their season with a slow start but con tinued to improve until they literally "swamped" Florence high school by a score of 74-83. A*ni lar score was run up a&aYnst Asheville-Biltmore junior 'colleke. These were the last games played, but their loss was evident in the game lost to Shaw Field by a score of 69-62. Dick Kolhagen of Rockford, Ill., and Al Spatta have taken Byrd and Gleichman's positions on the first five. Kolhagen looked very good against Florence high and Spatta did a good job also. The remainder of the "Biddies"' schedule is as follows: Feb. 16, Shaw Field in the Field house; Feb. 20, The Citadel at Charleston, and Feb. 28, Clemson in the Field house. The frosh have won four games and lost four games this season. Boxing Te Prepares Swimmers Meet Emory Tomorrow Carolina's swimming team jour neys to Atlanta to meet the Emory tankmen in their home pool tomor row. There will be only one re maining meet after this one. The final dual meet will be with The Citadel. After The Citadel, the Game cocks will enter the Southern Con ference finals in Raleigh, Feb. 22, 23, and 24. In the finals, team scores will not be kept, but the meet will be based on individual scores. The Gamecocks have sev eral good prospects for this meet and will send a squad of six men to Raleigh. The season will be closed out with the state meet, to be held in the local pool, some time in March. Meeting Of Golf Prospects To Be Held Monday Morning A meeting of all men interested in trying out for the University of South Carolina golf team will be held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock in the Field house. The Gamecocks' only wins came from Campassi and Spann, the latter winning by a technical knockout. Observers gen erally agreed the fights were closer than the final score indicates, and the statistics stand behind this story. Three of Carolina's six losses were by a margin of one point. After a short rest, Carolina takes on the Bulldogs from The Citadel in the Field house here on February 24, at 8 p. m. The Blue and White team will bring an out standing aggregation to our ring. Among them will be Bryant John son, a powerful 175-pounder, and team captain George Campson, a strong contender who fights at 155 pounds. Fore Southern Conferent Scheduled For Fiel By FRED McALISTER The Carolina basketball team re turns to the Field house tonight at 8 o'clock where they once again will be able to put five men on the court and at the same time at tempt to beat Wake Forest. The Gamecocks hope to find the home court soothing to their feet after playing on foreign grounds of disaster. In the last three games away from home about all that Carolina has to show for their jour ney are three defeats. Besides being defeated by Mary land, George Washington a n d Wake Forest, the road trips have brought them the lowest score com piled by the team this season and an overtime period played partly by only three players. The tourney bound Carolina team 'will be out to improve their win and loss column, get revenge for an earlier defeat by Wake Forest and gain title to third place in conference standings. This is next to the last game for the Gamecocks at home and the fourth from the last game of regu lar season play. The season will end next Friday night in the Field house when Clemson college pays a visit. This has cut his con ference average to 26.2. He has al ready assured himself of winning state scoring honors with his 23.4 point average.
