Intramurals
Start Again
Intramural athletics swung back
into action this week after a two
week layoff. Basketball got under
way Wednesday night. It was an
noiunced by the Intramural office
that 28 teams had been entered and
were to tangle for the Campus
Championship niow held by the
Block "C"' Club.
T[here are 16 Independent teams

petition. A mong these are the divi

the boys of Block "C" who will be
among the favorites to grab the
title this year.

The Carolina Gamecocks, cur
rently tied for third place in Sou
thern Conference standings with
William and Mary and almost as
sured of a bid to the conference
tournament at Raleigh March 1, 2,
and 3, return to home grounds to
night when they meet the Univer
sity of North Carolina at 8 o'clock.
The basketeers, sporting a 9-4
conference record and a 10-8 total
record, meet the northerners for
the first time this season and have
a chance to end the week by hold
ing sole title to third place in the
conference.
Captain Jim Slaughter will be
out to run his individual scoring
record in conference competition
higher and at the same time take
the individual scoring lead away
from Duke University's Dick
Groat.
In Tuesday night's gam'e with
Wake Forest he broke his old mark
of 338 when he dropped in 29
points to run his season's total to
342 for conference play and 461
points for all games.
Slaughter's average for the
season stands at 25 points for all
games and 26.3 for conference
games. If he maintains this 25
point average he will reach 500
points by the end of the season.
. Slaughter's closest competitor in
the scoring race, Dwane Morrison,
continued to establish himself as
one of the leading players of the
state and conference by raising his
average for 18 games to 14.2.
The forward's foul shot average
improved too. He has dropped in
46 foul shots out of 54 attempts
giving him an accuracy average of
85 per cent.
Guard Don Cox, who has em
phasized getting the ball in to his
teammates more this year than
shooting himself, continued to play
an aggressive floor game and at
the same time compiled a 7.4 shoot
ing average.
Carolina's tallest starting guard
Mickey Best and Forward Johnny
Peterson have averaged 8.3 and 8.4
for the season.
Only six more games remain on
the 1951 USC schedule -- three of
them being in the Field house. The
South Carolinians will make their
final out-of-the-state road trip
next week when they play Mary
land and George Washington.
They return to the Field house
Feb. 16 to play Wake Forest, then
to ChiZ& tonUI to plaiy The1 Citadea.
The season will end in the Field
house wvith Clemson being the
visitor.

Under Way;
Light workouts in the Field
house highlighted the first week of
baseball practice for the 1961 edi
tion of the Carolina Gamecocks.
Over 20 prospects were on hand
to greet Coach Ted Petoskey as he
urged all those interested in base
ball and with baseball experience
to report.
Only four lettermen from last
year's team are returning. Coach
Petoskey said that positions on
this year's team are wide open
and has asked all boys interested
to report to the Field house at
1:30 p. m. Monday.
Catcher Gus Allen, Pitchers Bill
Camp and Grady Faireloth and
Outfielder Bobby Rogers are the
only holdovers from last year's
team.
The 23-game schedule will open
March 22, when the Carolina nine
goes to Greenville to play Furman
university.
The remainder of the schedule is:
March 23, Furman at Greenville;
March 28 and 29, Michigan State
in Columbia; March 30, Duke in
Columbia; April 9 and 10, Clemson
at Clemson; April 13, Wake Forest
at Wake Forest; April 14, Duke
at Durham; April 17, Ogden
