The Count Is Thirteen
Of forty-seven men who might
have played in last week's chilly
fray with Wake Forest's highly *
f w destructive Demon Deacons, thir
teen may do so no more. Their
finale was less likely to attract
attention than a man buying cof
fee in the canteen at ten o'clock
of a Monday morning.
On the date of this finale, below
freezing winds blew across college
gridirons from coast to coast, and
even All-Americans took a back
seat to the weather. Columbia was
., a< not excepted, and the man who was
to have charge of that duty had
evidently forgotten to put anti
freeze in the Garnet and Black
football machine. As that machine
sputtered and coughed on Satur
day afternoon, so sputtered and
'" died the hopes of these dozen and
one men for finishing in the blaze
of grid glory which their previous
performances so richly deserved.
But it must indeed be a chill
wind that blows no good, for the
very inauspiciousness of the oc
casion has enabled the thirteen to
stand as equals in one final ap
pearance on the pages which have
been so devoted to their exploits
these many seasons. Their names:
Bobby Rogers tno picture), Ash
<:>{ley Phillips, Ed Pasky, Gus Allen,
Gene Herterick, Buddy Amsler,
Benny Skinner, Roy Skinner, Dave
Sparks, Lamar Collie, Wilbur
Newman, Bishop Strickland, and
Bill Killoy.

For Gene, playing before i

It was the moment of glory befor<
the fans he dazzled so many timei
before while prepping at Fayette
ville High School.
The flashy halfback built uI
quite a reputation in the Tar Hee;
state and was selected to the all.
state team. He also sparked hia
squad in the Optimist Bowl, a
North Carolina version of the
Horse Bowl. His running and pass.
ing helped his school to the statE
AAA championship two -years ir
succession. His competitioh forJhE
halfback slot was provided by Nut
Smith now playing for Wake For
est, whom Gamecock fans should
remember. With this reputatior
Gene received many offers fror
the Tarheel colleges, but decided
upon Carolina. The reason for hii
decision lies in the fact that he iE
normally a Palmetto native. Aftei
moving from Barnwell to Colum
bia he migrated to Fayetteville
where he now lives. "I just always
planned to go to Carolina," says
Wilson.
Besides football Gene also played
baseball in high school but ha:
sacrificed the latter for track sinca
coming to the University. He was
on the track team last semester
and will therefore be eligible for
varsity competition this spring.

Gene has drawn a great deal of
defensive duty for the Biddies thisI
year but has managed to roll up a1
goodly number of yards rushing -
while scoring four times. He was
i a passing ace in high school and
o has thrown a few for the Biddies,
one of which traveled for a touch
down against the Citadel.
Gene modestly gives the "crdt
for his football ability to his high
school coach Bill Dole, now cah

credits the success of the Biddies
to the co-operation and teamwork
and selects Bob Korn and Johnny
Gramling as sure bets to pull duty
with the varsity next year. R
