This Afternoon
By BOB WALLACE
The Carolina Biddies journey to
Wake Forest to take on the Gold
and Black's freshman squad this
afternoon in what will be the last
game of the current season for the
Biddies.
The Biddies evened a private
score against the Citadel and went
over the top in doing so by trounc
ing the Bullpups 56-6. Their spurs
are just a little longer than they
were in September and they leave
a deeper gash.
The capable backs proved beyond
a doubt that they are definitely
top contenders for varsity positions
next season. The offensive line
wasn't as good as it has been in
past games but it held its own.
The Citadel passing attack had
the Biddies confused for the first
half and enabled the Bullpups to
rack up a 7-6 lead. But in the
second half it was the Biddies' show

Great At Quar
By RALPH GREGORY
A tall, slender lad from Orange
burg may be the answer to Game
cock prayers for an effective air
attack. The art of passing, sore
spot of the Birds all year, is one
of Johnny Gramling's main assets
and quite a few yards should be
gained via hiA passes in the next
few years.
His passing is very versatile,
featuring not only short, bullet
tosses but also long, spiraling
aerials that give his ends plenty
of time to glide under them.
Johnny's consistency has been
proved many times this season;
against the Clemson Cubs when he
hit with the first five passes that
he threw; against Citadel when he
Wilson, Korn, and Drawdy came in
for their usual game and shared
in the honors.
The Biddie scoring drives were
amazingly short. From the first
play from scrimmage they scored
and then did it again. The next
one took four; the next, two plays;
the next, none; and the last, two
plays. In the space of ten plays
the Biddies had scored six TD's.
That is a record-hard to beat in
any freshman circle.
The defensive line held the Pups
to 55 yards rushing, 40 of them
in the first half. In the second
half the fine held them for a minus
rushing total and probably would
have continued had not the coaches
put the reserves in, who inci
dentally, did very well themselves.
In the first half a Gramling pass
to Cox tallied for the sole Biddie
counter of that period. Jeffcoat
sparked a 96-yard drive and he
carried for the last 13 yards him
self. Gramling then passed to Cox,
who made a spectacular catch for
the touchdown. It was on the first
play from scrimmage.
Carolina kicked off and im
mediately recovered a Pup fumble.
Then again they scored on the
first play from scrimmage. Wilson
pitched to end Warren Clarke for
46 yards and the TD. After a 30
yard march Wilson raced over
from the 12 for the next.
On a double reverse Cox went
47 yards for a marker and theni
back Bill Behrens recovered a Pup
fumble in the end zone for the
seventh Biddie score. The last
counter came on a Gleichman to
Korn pass for 28 yards.
"Do you charge batteries here?"
"Sure do."
"Then put a new one in this car
and charge it to my husband."

tossed two for TD's and set up
another score. He has thrown five
passes that went the route so far
this year including two against
Clemson.
Passing, however, is not the only
accomplishment of this talented
Biddie for he handles the ball with
the poise of a veteran pro. His
handoffs and pitchouts afford the
other backs ample opportunity to
break away for huge gains. His
signal calling leaves little to be de
sired as he seems to instinctively
have the play that will go.
This blond youngster is counted
on to add quite a bit of spark to
the Gamecock attack on the
strength of his high school and
freshman records. During his
career at Orangeburg High, Johnny
was selected to the all-state team
as well as being an outstanding
performer in the Horse'Bowl game
and the Upper State-Lower State
fray. Teamed with other all-star
material he has been a main cog
in the Biddie attack with his ex
cellent generalship, ball, handling
and all round play.
Although he weighs only 165
Gramling is counted on to throw
plenty of weight around when he
is promoted to the varsity next
year.

Bish came to
Carolina f r o m
Mullins in 1947, heralded as a fine
college prospect. He never let his
pre-college rating down, because
week after week the 192-pounder
danced the ends, and exploded off
tackles for fabulous gains. Over
the four-year distance his total
yardage gained is close to the
2000 mark, and his average per
go is a little better than 5.5. This
total is amazing because the Bish
has been hampered with injuries
for the last two seasons and be
sides such teams as Duke, Georgia
Tech, N. C., and others have always
been laying for him, set to slow
him down.
Bishop came up to Carolina in
1947 from Mullins high school, and
quickly made it known that he could
run. He played so well during his
freshman year that sport writers
gave him a berth on the All-State
team. Heo repeated the perform
ance in 1948 and 1949, and has an
excellent chance this year to make
