February 18, 1982, in Nyiregyhaza,
Hungary. There he studied and
finished seven years of education.
When he was only twelve, the Rus
sians came into his homeland, and
Louis and his family fled to Upper
Austria. The young Hungarian
lived there for five years while he
learned German, a little English,
and did his studying by borrowing
books from Innsbruck and return
ing there for his exams.
Traveling under the aid of the
IRO and the DP program, the
Szilacyi family arrived in New
York on November 26, 1949. Fron1
there the family was supposed to
travel to Wisconsin, but the NCWC
the Catholic organization which
took charge of finding a job for
Louis' father, informed them that
the job in that state had been
filled; so the group traveled to
South Carolina, where Mr. Szilacyi,
formerly a merchant, now works
on a dairy farm.
On his fifth day in this country
Louis entered Salley High School.
Skipping the twelfth grade, he
took an entrance exam and entered
Carolina. He is now a freshman
majoring in pre-med.
As the oldest of four sons, Louis
is supporting himself, but despite
the difficulties involved, he says
that he is determined to finish
school.
