Biddies Little Birds Over Cubs I By BOB WALLACE The Carolina "Biddies" will again lead off the first battle with the Clemson "Cowdets" tonight when they tangle with the "Baby Cubs" at 8 o'clock. This game means to the freshman squad what the Big Thursday battle will mean to the varsity. It contains less color than that which accom panies the fracas of the big brothers but the outcome is indica tiveo things to come as the varsity coaehes watch this battle royal with an optimistjc eye. It has been a long time since Carolina has been blessed with a freshman squad such as in 1950. Usually it was a lot of good backs or a lot of good linemen but now the Bid dies have both. Anyone who saw the opening game with the Furman "Baby Wind" probably remembers the slashing runs and hard tackles made by the Biddies, making it seem that the Biddies are the team to beat in freshman circles. The Furman team was considered by some to be the top freshman squad in the state. The Biddies defeated the Clem son team 27 to 20 last year. The Cubs fumbled a great deal and the Birds took advantage of this. The now famous Forrest Calvert started this fumbling spree with a fumble on the first play from seminmmge. 11 ugh Merck recovered and Ilootie .Johnson vent 20 yards to the 10. Three plays later John son ripped through the line to score and Howard Hostetler con verted to give the Biddies a 7-0 lead with just two minutes of the game gone. The Cubs caught fire in the second half and scored three times,. ing two of the PAT's. . The Biddie defense is strong and should be able to stop any threat the Cubs may make. The break away backfield is loaded in every department, but the Clemsonites are not to b'e under-rated since they could pull an upset. "Big Wednesday" sets the stage for the most important sporting event in South Carolina since it is very often indicative of the out come of the Big Thursday game. If the Biddies take their game and if this is any measuring stick, the (;amecocks should also take theirs tomorrow. The Biddies have been preparing for the big meeting for a long time, as have the Cubs, so from the sidelines it looks like a plenti ful supply of action up until the time the final whistle blows. Volleyball Play Points Out Stars In Intramurals _ By RUDY THIGPEN The Carovets, last year's inde pendent champions, made their second bid for fame Tuesday by defeating highly rated McBryde, 21 to 4 and 21 to 12. They went on to score their second win Wednel1tsday, by defeating Newman Club, 15 to 5 and 15 to 6. Mc Bryde b)ounced b)ack from its iups,t lue Monday to down Maxcy Third Wednesdlay afternoon, 21 to 11 and 21 to 13. Maxcy took the second game, 7 to 21. McBryde, still looking for revenge, then de feated Tenement 19 and 21 in the first and third games, 15 to 12 and 15 to 5. Teneme'nt 19~ and 20 took the second game, 15-7. Roger Rabb was outstanding for McBryde. In the only other game in Independl (ent League. 11, Coker took the Chemical Engineers, 15-2 and 15-9. In I ndependlent Le~aguIe I, .Jake Salley and1( company from Tene ment 9 rolled over Tenement 1 and 5, 15 to 0 aind 15 to 1. They then dlefeated A.S.C.E. 15-(; and 15-4.
