This was partly due to the lack
of an outlet in the recreational
field for the men. But gradually,
it was discovered that to defeat an
enemy on the field in a good game
of football or the like, rather than
to defeat him in other types of
physical combat, was much better.
As various sports were intro
duced, the men took a greater in
terest in them. At first, baseball
was the sport, then football, but
after the turn of the century the
program became more varied. In
the '20's, intramural wrestling was
popular and in 1930 soccer was in
troduced into intramurals. The
program continued to become en
larged and participation en
couraged with the results that
Carolina now has one of the best
intramural programs in the state,
if not the best.

Biddies Meet
Furman Tonite
The Carolina "Biddies" will
open their season tonight at 8 p.
m. against the highly touted Fur
man "Little Hurricane" at Caro
lina stadium. The freshmen from
Furman have already beaten the
Wofford frosh this year.
The Little Hurricane is con
sidered by some to be the top frosh
squad in the state, with the Biddies
running a close second. Tonight's
game will probably decide this
issue.
The Biddies supposedly have a
good backfield that should be able
to rack-up some yardage, accord
ing to those who have seen them
in pre-game action. The linemen
are good enough to hold their own
both offensively and defensively
and reports have it that some of
these boys may be helping the var
sity in a big way come next Sep
tember.
From the office of Don Barton,
Carolina athletic publicity director,
comes an informal and unofficial
report that the following eight boys
have been showing up well in prac
tice and may be among those who
will take to the field against Fur
man tomorrow night: Clyde Ben
nett, St. Matthews, end; Bob Doan,
Decatur, Ga., tackle; Harry Per
kenson, Atlanta, Ga., guard; Rob
ert Brunson, Sumter, center; and
backs Joe Tanski of Michigan City,
Ind., J. W. "Jeepers" Jeffcoat of
Columbia, Johnny Gramling of
Orangeburg and Bobby Drawdy of
Summerville.

Looking for their first victory
of the still-young season the Game
cocks take the field tomorrow after
noon against the Yellow Jackets
of Georgia Tech on Atlanta's Grant
Field. Kick-off I. at 2:80.
Still smarting from last week's
14-0 loss to Duke, the Gamecocks
underwent a week of trying to
sharpen their aerial attack and
shoring up their defense for the
Tech ground game.
Performances last week gave
proof that the Gamecocks' running
game is a potent thing indeed, de
spite the fact they were unable to
score. Bishop Strickland's 67 yards
gained for 6.7 yards per try, and
Steve Wadiak's 79 yards gained
were bright spots in an otherwise
dreary afternoon. Add to this the
running of the "Greenwood Ghost,"
"Hootie" Johnson, and you..see some
reasons why Gamecock fans had
a right to crow.
Defensive laurels went to Gene
Herterick, Don Early, Hugh Merck
and "Spec" Granger. Heterick, in
on most of the tackles that were
made up the middle, drew praises
from Coach Enright, and appears
certain of a starting berth from
here on out.
Two giant soph tackles came into
their own and showed Gamecock
fans a preview of what to expect
for the next three years. Big Don
Early and Hugh Merck, playing

in their first varsity game, gave
watchers a more than satisfactory
performance. Another sophomore
slated for lots of action from his
defensive end spot is Greenville's

Defensive halfback Lockhart
McLendon will be lost to the squad
for the Tech game. He suffered
a broken blood vessel in his leg
in last week's game.
Offensive ends Fred Duckett
and W. A. Skelton, who were not
in top condition for the opening
game, will be ready for tomorrow's
action.
The Gamecocks will be out to
avenge last year's 18-8 fourth
quarter defeat at the hands of the
Engineers. Bill Killoy's first
period field goal put Carolina out
in front where they stayed until
the final quarter when the Yellow
Jackets caught fire and pushed
across two quick touchdowns.
