One battle of the Gamecocks' nine-game schedule is over,
but not forgotten. It brought out a lot of good points and
an eqal number of sore spots in the Carolina offensive as
well as defensive play, this tangle with Duke, but the Blue
Devils headed back to Durham with the imprints of sharp
chanticleer spurs still somewhat stinging where it hurts
most.
The good points of the Birds' showing can be summed
up in the running attack of Steve Wadiak, Bishop Strickland
and Hootie Johnson; the plays called by Ed Pasky in the
quarterback spot; the tackling of --Don Early; some pass
defense plays; and the line that formed an All-American
stand and would not give. There were other glimmerings
of brilliance, but they were inconsistent.
It was a good game, though, all in all. Spirit was at a
high level, both on the field and in the stadium. A Carolina
loss was predicted and expected, for early notices gave proof
that the Dukes were the men to beat and, without a doubt,
they still are.
As for the Rambling Wrecks of Georgia Tech, who
knows ? The face of Coach Bobby Dodd, only half as expres
sive as that of a poker player, says nothing. News releases
-nothing.
Be that as it may, Atlanta will be given a gracious share
of excitement come Saturday. The opening game with a
powerful Blue Devil team may be just what the doctor
ordered for the Gamecocks. The first-game jitters should
be over. The sore spots have been brought to light in battle,
so some arrestment of that situation may be made. And,
what is more important, the
players should have more
self-confidence. They held a
.~' team which is rated among
the top 20 of the nation to a
two-score margin, and could
have done better than that
* with less bad luck and a lot
less Cox.

will tell a bigger tale.
Meet The Coach
Rex Enright, Carolina head
coach and athletic director
for eight years, has never
had the glory of producing
an undefeated team, but he
has won his share with some
.dern good squads. Moreover,
he has made it a policy to play teams that make games
exciting and inter esting, not pushovers. That is increasingly
evident.
When Enright first came to Carolina in 1938, he sched
uled top-flight teams, beat six of them, lost to four and
tied one. He continued his building program until the war
caused a lag in his progression. After the war he returned
to start where he had left off and now the results of his
endeavors are beginning to show through. More power to
the Coach.
Father Bell*
It was a hard blow to hear that R. Glenn Bell, "Father
Bell" to his many hundreds of friends, is seriously Ill. It
was a sort of personal blow, for Father Bell was on this
reporter's journalism beat for nearly a year and you get to
know a fellow pretty well in that length of time.

Prepare for a shock, ye serene
who have lived the past few days
in the protective shade of Jake
Penland's comparatively arbitrary
Sunday morning football account.
Jake thought Carolina played a
good game - that they lost on a
break - and maybe you thought
so, too.
The following should make garnet
and black red and white corpuscles
bubble violently at 212 degrees
Fahrenheit. In short, bring Bird
blood to a brisk boil.
Outside the city of Columbia,
stretching north, east, south, and
west across the great expanses, run
the major oiganized wire services.
And where they ran last Saturday
evening, Sunday morning news
papers ran some very disagreeable
reports of how Billy Cox and a
gang of blockers ran hogwild
against a bunch of bewildered
Gamecocks in Columbia, South
Carolina.
Feature writers have been
grooming the Blue Devils for
a powerhouse role and they are
axious to strengthen their predic
tions. They have reporters who can
back them up without seeming to
deviate from the subjective news
story.
One report accomplished its
tainted deed in one fell sentence.
"The score might have been
doubled," it read, "if the Game
cocks hadn't made two desperate
goal line stands." There was no
merit for Carolina's defensive play.
The picture painted in that sen
tence showed eleven fatigued men,
all quite incapable of anything but
wild lunging, each receiving shots
of adrenalin between downs, and
perating only on the intensity of
