Ce } o ' ee ... a spoke a week ... By MARLENE RAST Now that everyone has gotten over the wear and tear of registration, things are really beginning to roll in the way of parties, ball games, engagements and weddings. Phi Kaps and their dates started the new semester in true style by having a "Fat Back Fry" last Friday night at alumni brother Ed Teague's lake, Sunview. It's a good thing cold weather hadn't set in at that time! As for getting "hitched," people seem to fall as hard in September as in June. Jim McCallum and Avis Johnson took the big step on Saturday, September 23. Offered as further proof we have Jack Kilgore and Ann Jean McFadden of Sumter; Ken Hill and Betsy Moore of Timmonsville; Jack Ci'utchfield and Lanette Macklen of Myrtle Beach. Seems like people never learn. Friday night we had Barbara McSwain, Pi Phi, and Bill Young, Carolyn Alcorn, Pi Phi, and Tom Clark, J ean Ander son, Pi Phi, and Carroll McDuffie, Pi KA, journeyipg to see Mr. and Mrs. Leman Bunn in Sumter. Rushing is coming into its own these days. Phi Kappa Sigma held their first rush "smoker" at the Phi Kap house on Wednesday, September 20. Pi KA's also held a rush "smoker", last week in the chapter rooms. All this rushing could be the reason for so many dizzy people running around campus. Here's other news! We hear that John Buice is engaged to Dorothy Fant of Anderson and Grady Rawls is pinned to Mary Kay of Rock Hill. My! How these people get around! Changes seem to be in order these days. Lamda Chi lpha has moved from third floor Coker to more attractive quarters in Tenement 10 (as if everyone didn't know). Lavina Trumbower of Glenside, Pennsylvania, is now wearing the pin of Bard Allison, Sigma Nu. Other girls who recently received Sigma Nu pins are Sue Sutton of Winthrop, pinned by Lewis Haigler and Perine Baker, also of Winthrop, who wears the pin of "Hootie" Johnson. Sigma Nu's seem to have the situation well in hand. Phi Sigma Kappa honored its new initiates :nd their dates with a weiner roast and blanket party after the game Saturday night. The new initiates are Toby Ward, Hugh Bond and Ed Ladd. Several Phi Sig alumni also enjoyed the party. Bob Whitehead, Phi Sigma Kappa, pinned Betty Mc Cutchean, Chi Omega of Queens College, during the summer vacation. Zeta Tau Alpha sorority was honored this past weekend by a visitor from national headquarters. Miss Jan Doty of Illinois arrived here Saturday for a few days' visit before she goes on to Florida. Kappa Sig's honored rushees last week with luncheons and smokers at the Elk's Club. Speaking of formals, the Pi KA's are making plans for a big time November 17 at the Jefferson hotel. There's to be a dance from 9 to 1 with the Pi KA alumni from North and South Carolina invited to enjoy the music of Woody Woodward and his orchestra. The Newman Club had a party September 24 at Bond's Country Home with Professor Galgano chaperoning. September 29, Phi Delta Phi is having a rush party (stag, that is). Saturday, September 30, WUSC is havIng a supper party at the 'Y' Camp from 5 till 11. Mackey Quave is chaperoning the affair. Sounds like fun, huh? Looks as if Carolina will be wvell rep)resented at the Geor gia Tech game this coming Saturday. "Fanny'' Fowler, Bert Edens, Kitty Riley, Ed Teague, Joe Askew, and Bill Yetman are making big p)lans for' the weekend. Something is bound to happen when this gang hits town. As a closing note and as a remhindler of the by-gone (lays of a well-spent summer' we hav'e a poem~ handed in by a faithful reader: ME DIUM-R AIR E You may be the girl in the social whirl Who goes dowvn to the sea to get wet; You may be the one stretched out in the sand(, But we wouldn't want to bet. To most of the women, what we call swimmin' Means just sand andl oil and skin; Hardly a daughter has been near the water Since suntan's been getting the men. So, two pieces each, you wear on the beach And cook yourself MEDIUM-RARE. But it's not your tan that'll trap) a man It's the suit that's only half there. As far as Dr. Rister knows, his will be the first textbook to de scribe American history in such orderly sequence. "Instead of the old way of presenting one move ment separate from the others, where a student got only a seg ment of the picture, we hope to carry all these narrative threads together just as history unfolds," he explains.
