Mrs. Louise J. DuBose, professor

to her sociology 47 class recently.
"There are three people you'll

who has had more trouble than you,
someone who has been sicker than
you, and someone who has worked
harder than you."

Professor Mercer gave a gay

"And many a time we've had a
spree at Billy Maybin's, 01" sang
the early Carolina students. "Billy"
Maybin for many years kept the
Congaree Hotel, where Jerome
Hotel now stands, which was one
of the most popular resorts of the
students. It was there that the
students passed their hours with
strong drink.
Near the college were located
several other shops where a stu
dent could easily forget his
troubles. Some of the proprietors
did a credit business and loaned
money to the students.
Since 1835 there has been a see
tion in the by-laws of tie univer
sity forbidding the possession of
weapons by students. However, in
1837, one student brought along a
bowie knife which he planned to
take to the circus with him! It
was the practice in those days for
the students to try to beat up the
circus people. The student with
the bowie knife, upon seeing one
of the circus men about to brain
one of his companions, stabbed the
man with the knife and killed him.
The student was acquitted and
graduated.
Though weapons have been for
bidden it has never been possible
to completely banish them. A

quaint form of punishment in the
early days for firing a gun was
the memorization of 50 lines of
Vergil.
For many years the feeling be
tween citizens of Columbia arid the
students was one of antagonism.
When a student found himself on
the point, of being arrested he
would yell "College" and the stu
dents would come running. Conse
quently, as soon as a student was
jailed, he was bailed out or other
wise released.
On the Sunday before commence
ment in 1839 one of the students
was arrested and hurried to the
local gaol because of a disturbance
he had made at a church. The cry
of "College" reached the campus
and brought the students on the
run. Dr. R. W. Gibbes, in antici
pation of what might happen, had
already bailed the young man out
when the students reached the jail.
The brother of the student who
had been arrested r0shed into the
guard house and threatened the
entire police force with the
flourishing of a pistol. This ac
tion resulted in his expulsion, al
though he had already passed his
examinations.
There is no record since that
time of the Columbia police setting
foot on the university campus.

Conducts College
Graduate Survey
The "Reader's Digest" is con
ducting a survey of placement of
ficers in an attempt to find out
why college graduates do not
branch out into businesses of their
own.
The magazine has observed that
most graduates want to work for
big corporations instead of form
ing their own firms. The Place
nient Bureau here has only found
out that the graduates are trying
to obtain security through old age
benefits, etc.
