To Be Reconditioned
Candidates for the 1950 univer
sity tennis team met in the field
house Feb. 27, to make plans for
the coming year.
According to Coach Hank Bartos,
the tennis courts by McBryde are
to be reserved in the afternoons
for team practice. They are to be
reconditioned soon and plans are
under way to install lights so that
students wishing to do so, may play
at night.
Sportsquiz
For the second consecutive week,
Billy Kincaid, Box 2231, is our
Sportsquiz winner. He was the
only entry to correctiy identiUy
last week's mystery man as
George (Nap) Rucker, former
southpaw pitching great of the
Brooklyn Dodgers. To Billy, our
congratulations and two f r e e
passes to the comfortable Carolina
Theater, where "When Willie
Comes Marching Home"~ is now
showing.
This week's athlete is also from
the baseball ranks. He came fror.i
a Pennsylvania coal mine to at
tract attention of the scouts with
his blazing fast ball. Most of the
major league clubs weren't inter
ested, however, when they learned
that his curve ball was almost non
existant.
After kicking around the minors
for a few years, he was finally
drafted by the Chicago White Sox.
lie obtained the greatest break of
his life when he drew Elmer
Stricklett, a spit-ball pitcher for
a roommate. Stricklett taught the
rookie howv to throw a spitter, and
he pitched the hitless wonders to
the pennant and world champion
ship in 1906.

will be placing a large portion of
his hopes for a successful season
on the shoulders of Ray McKenzie.
The sprinter from Kingstree is
one of the few lettermen on the
squad. He wa&s a better than aver
age performer last year, and
should prove to be a valuable man
this season.
