McCown Speaks
On Nursing Plans
At High Schools '
Miss Viana B. McCown, head of
the department of nursing at the
university, spoke to senior girls
at Columbia High School, Thurs
day, February 9, of the five-year
nursing plan offered by the uni- I
versity.
She spoke to the senior girls at
Dreher High School, Monday. Miss
McCown makes these appearances
every year at this time to explain
and introduce the five-year nursing
plan. In March and April she will
speak to girls in high schools over
the state.
Two of the five years are spent
at Carolina. The curriculum here
includes courses in English, his
tory, chemistry, biology, nursing,
political science, sociology, psy
chology, physical' education, and
orientation. After 32 months of
clinical study in nursing, the di
ploma of a Graduate Nurse is
earned.
- Practice Teaching
By USC Students
Fills High Schools
Dr. J. McT. Daniel, head profes
sor of the department of secondary
education, said there is an overflow
of practice teachers from the uni
versity. Seventy seniors are now
doing secondary practice teaching.
The four high schools that are
beine used for this preparatory
teaching are: Columbia, Wardlaw
Jr., Brookland-Cayce, and Univer
sity.
There are 52 men and 19 women
1 in the total of 70 practice teachers,
and of this number, 2 are in the
arts department, 14 in history, 10
in science, 3 in mathematics, 1 in
French, and '2 in music. Fifteen
are in English, 2 in distributive
,dication (retailing), and 21 in
physical education.
Practice teaching has been a
regular course in the department
of education since 1932, when the
department was opened. It was
carried on at University High
- School, but the growth of enroll
ment in education at the universit,
necessitated the use of several othei
high schools.
The practice teachers are in com
O ple'te charge of the high school
clases they are teaching. The
regular teachers act only as super
visors.

Service A ids
Sims Coeds
By BARBARA DERRICK
Feature Editor
One of the most impressive fel
Dwship promotion services at the
iniversity is the Sunday night
andlelight ceremony held in the
rusic room of Sims dormitory.
The service is sponsored by the
CWCA, and each Sunday two Sims
rirls conduct the fifteen-minute
ervice in the candle-lighted room
lirectly opposite Sims lobby.
Cassandra Manda is the chair
nan of the "Y" committee that con

nd Dot Wilson are responsible for
he services at Wade Hampton.
The service is held at 11 p. m.,
he girls come to the music room
ust as they happen to be when
;he 11 p. m. bell rings.
Candlelight is conducted with
his axiom in mind; any large
rroup of people living together
ieed spiritual guidance.
The service never exceeds fifteen
ninutes. Candlelight begins with
t devotional which is followed by
;he singing of a hymn or a solo.
A brief program is planned
tround one particular word or
)hrase, which usually stresses the
trt of living harmoniously with
me's fellowman.
Mrs. Hattie M. Pender, Sims
iostess, said in reference to the
vening service, "Candlelight is a
rathering of students for spiritual
juidance, which is needed through
;he week."
