Chi. On Mrs. William Named '49 1 School QueE Mrs. William Wright, of of the School of Engineerinj sored by the Engineers Joint on December 15. She was chosen from A.S.C.E., A.S.M.E., A.I.E.E., and Ch.E.S., engineering societies or the USC campus. Mrs. Wright was the candidate of A.I.E.E. The decision of the judges was announced, and the queen was pre. sented with the Queen's Cup dur ing the dance. Mrs. Wright is the former Miss Helen Gentry, of Summerton. She received her degree from the uni. versity in 1948. Sidelights On History Found Here By MARGARET FICQUETTE The South Caroliniana Library, the first separate college library building in America, contains the history and lore of the state and books by and concerning native South Carolinians. In addition, there are bustp and pictures in the large reading room and the small ruoul of the second floor. Several of the pictures give the early history of the statC; its beginning, life during the Revolu tionary war, and the war between the states. Various state records are also to be found at the library, among them, the resolves and resolutions of the legislature, the papers of the tax convention in 1770, and files of personal wills by coun ties. These wills afford a good sidelight into the education of many property owners. One can also find wills of considerable property made by women even in the early history of the state. Biographies ond autobiographies, as well as many stories and novels of South Carolina add to the state lore. Among the miscellaneous booka on different subjects, there is an 1874 book on etiquette, which ad vises the reader to have a good breakfast, get a long night's sleep, and follow other rules of health so as to prevent colds. Movies are taken by ths fresh man group to the orphanage each Weusday night as part of the project of the freshmen for this year. Law Seniors Plan Gala Celebration To Follow Exams Graduating seniors in the school of law will celebrate the end of their exams with a party and in formal dance on Monday, Jan. 23, from 9 1). m. until 1 a. m., George Stuckey, social chairman of the class, has announced. Those invited will include the seniors and their dates. YWCA To Sponsor Its Coffee Hour On Exam Evenings The Social Planning Committee of the Y will sponsor its custom ary coffee hour each night during exam week from 9:30 until 10:30 p. mn. in Flinn Hall, according to Marie Edwards, YWCA secretary. All students will be invited. Exception will be made on Mon day night, January 23, when the Sophomor-e Y wvill hold its regular canteen from 8 until 10 p. mn. Freshman girls living in the dormitory will he excused for one half hour to attend the coffee hour, according to Mrs. Childs, dean of women. Only requirement will b)e that they attend in a group. The revolutionized( dormitory ar rangement houses six studlents in a suite which includes three bed rooms, living room, kitchen-dinette, and bath. A women's and a men's dormitory, the first of this, type, were built for the University of ( Miami 'with FH[A assistance. The new dlormitories house more than 300 studlents. A staff of hostesses is maintained for the women's dlormitory. Girls can en tertain their dates in reception rooms on the main dlormitory floor. Miss Merritt said the newv dormi tories were very popular. Newcomers Club Heard Ochs Talk : At Recent Meeting Professor Robert Ochs, of the USC history department, addressed members of the university's New comers Club and their guests at the club's meeting Jan. 3. Professor Ochs spoke on his travels in Guatemala last summer and illustrated his talk with slides. A short business meeting was followed by refreshments, which were served in the dining room of the Faculty Club house.
