Gamecc Birds Favored After Upsetting Demon Deacons By TOM PRICE Despite the parlay cards which rate them 21 point favorites, Rex Enright's Gamecocks are not tak ing the Citadel Bulldogs lightly. They well remember a bitter lesson that was taught them by a sup posedly weak Furman university Hurricane earlier in the season. The Birds were supposed to win that one by several touchdowns too, but when the smoke of battle had cleared Furman was the victor by a score of 14-7. The Gamecocks aren't planning on letting lightning strike twice. Although battered and bruised after last Saturday's thrilling 27 20 conquest of Wake Forest, the squad is in good shape and with the exception of first string-offen sive center Larry Smith, who twisted a knee in the Wake fray and will be unable to play, the en tire squad should be ready for the ] Bulldogs. The Citadel has not been vic torious over the Gamecocks since. 1926, but they have won three straight and with an improved of fense will be out to upset the Birds for the old grads who will be in the stands. Cadet automobiles in Charleston have been displaying "Citadel Beat Carolina" posters since the Bulldogs' 25-19 victory over Davidson Thanksgiving day. The 20,000 spectators who were present at Carolipa Stadium last Saturday afternoon when the Gamqcocks upset the heavily favor ed Wake Forest Demon Deacons were treated to a brilliant display of football by an inspired bunch of Gamecocks and a band of Deacons who wouldn't quit, even when they were three touchdowns behind in the fourth and final period. Pasky Stars The Gamecocks played their finest game of the year, even sur passing their Big Thursday per formance against Clemson, and de served the well earned victory. Ed Pasky, Bird quarterback and defensive linebacker, electrified the crowd with a brilliant 101-yard runback of an intercepted pass for a touchdown. The Gamecocks were leading 6-0 early in the second period, but the Deacs were on a sustained march toward the Caro lina goal. Carol Blackerby, Wake quarterback, threw a forward pass toward an intended receiver in the Carolina end zone, but Pasky in tercepted the aerial behind his own goal and raced the entire length of the field untouched. He received a key block on the Carolina 20 thrown by end Dick Fagan and was in the clear for the remaining 80 yards. With seconds remaining in the first half, Pasky again intercepted a Wake pass, this time on his own 48, and returned to the Wake 20. Montgomery, head During the weeAnding Nov. 12, the USC team competed with Geor gia Tech and Marquette Univer sity. Out of possible seores of 1000, the Georgia Tech team scored 898, the Marquette team 827 and USC 906. During the week,ending Nov. 19, Carolina lost to Ohio State, which was one of the leading teams in the national WilliAm Randolph Hearst Trophy matches. Out of a possible score, of 2000, Ohio State scored 1816 and USC scored 1782. Dur ing the same week Carolina defeat ed Idaho 1782 to 1780. Matches scheduled before Dec. 8 are against Minnesota, Harvard and Duke, Sergeant Montgomery said. There will also be a pistol team match this week against the Uni versity of Minnesota. This will be the first pistol team match of the year. awarded a carton of Chesterfield cigarettes, according to Campus Representatives Glenn Gainey and Bill Gibbes for Liggett and Myers Tobacco Company. The tobacco company sponsored several score guessing contests on the campus during the football season, and the campus representa tives said that they would like to express their thanks for the fine interest that the student body has shown in participating in these contests. Ed Hunt, a sophomore from New Orleans, La., is a likely looking prospect for the middleweight slot. Grady DeCall, 185, and Pete Cam passi, 125, regulars on last year's squad are back with a year's valu able experience behind them. Both of these boys will bear watching this year. With the departure of Avant, Jim Briggman will probably be come the marked man on the squad. After a mediocre 1948 season when he fought in several different weights at different t i m e a, "Hatchet Jim" came into his own in 1949.
