*a spoke a ovk By MAY HERBERT FRATERNITIES WOUND UP THEIR RUSH SEASONS with a whirl of bang-up parties for the rushees. PHI KAPPA SIGMA gave its last rush smoker for this season yesterday afternoon at the Woman's Club. Fraternity brothers, rushees, and their -dates also partied Monday night at the VFW post on Beltline Boulevard. Eddie Helms and his orchestra played for the affair, which was cabaret-style. The decorations were furnished by Jack Crowley, called by his fraternity brothers "The official fraternity artiste," and consisted of a silhouette of each of the 42 actives in the chapter. The party atmosphere was also partly created by Charlie Hutto, who placed crepe paper streamers in stra tegic places. Jeff Long, master of ceremonies, provided the entertainment. PHI SIGMA KAPPA ALSO ENDED ITS SEASON last night, with a buffet supper and dance at thi Wade Hamp ton hotel. PHI KAPPA SIGMA members, rushees, and their dates enjoyed a supper party two weeks ago at Pinewood Lake. The party was completed by a delicious chicken supper, some ballad singing by "Boo" Dubose, a skit by Fanny Fowler and "Dougie" Riley, and the singing of fraternity songs, led by Ed Thompson. HOUSEPARTYING AT PAULEY'S ISLAND last week were a number of Pi Kappa Phi's and their dates, including "Pete" Covington, Marvis Jean Keels,, Bill Eason, and Sister Hubbard. Mr. and Mrs. Bill ("Slim") Brown and Capt. and Mrs. E. A. Gibson chaperoned. FOOTBALL- GAMES WERE CALLING MANY in the past week-ends, and during Thanksgiving holidays, Carolina was well-represented at games throughout the East. No vember 19 saw quite a few Sigma Nu's in Atlanta for our game with Georgia Tech. Some of them were Clarke and Al Adickes, Benjie Knowlton, Bert Jessup, Paul Field, Squee Trotter, and J. C. Meetze. After the game, George and Tiny DesChamps gave a wonderful party in their apartment for the Sigma Nu brothers. DELTA DELTA DELTA ALSO TURNED OUT FOR FOOTBALL. Mush Sanders spent the Thanksgiving holidays at Duke university attending the football game a-nd dances. Leck Paschal and Stuart Mullins went to New York and Philadelphia, taking in the Army-Navy game Saturday. Suan McElv-n went to Charlotte for the Citadel-Davidson game Thursday, while Stuart Mosely went to Chapel Hill for the Carolina-Virginia game. ALSO AT THE ARMY-NAVY GAME IN PHILADEL PHIA was Jay Quick, Phi Sigma Kappa. PHI BETA PHI MEMBERS WERE ALSO BIT BY THE TRAVELING BUG as far as football was concerned. Deloris Meyer attended both the Citadel-Davidson game in Char lotte and the Clemson-Furman game in Greenville. Sybil Patrick, Maxine Todd, and Jo Ann Patrick journeyed to Atlanta for the Georgia Tech-Carolina game. ANOTHER REASON CAUSED Mary Ann Cappleman, Delta Delta Delta, to travel, however. She went down to Pensacola, Florida, to visit her fiance, Jack Kaneft, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, who is in the Naval Air Corps. AND DOWN AT THE CITADEL THIS WEEK-END was Barbara Murphy, who was recently pinned by Bob Douglas. PINS AND ENGAGEMENT RINGS were flying around these last few weeks. J. B. Allen, Phi Kappa Sigma of Co lumbia, gave Kat Bowen, Chi Omega, also of Columbia, a diamond last week. And Leman Bunn, Phi Kappa Sigma alumnus, also gave Ann Davis, Phi Beta Phi, a diamond. Barbara Ann Hester, Phi Beta Phi, is now engaged to Lt. Herbert Hopkins. TWO FORMER UNIVERSITY STU DENTS, Sara Ann Swygert and William Gilmore Simms Buck, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, of Greenville and Manning were married Nov. 12. Pi Kappa Phi Karl Smith married Alice Lee Dickman, of Florence, Thanksgiving Eve. HONEYMOONING IN KEY WEST, FLORIDA, now are Henry Gaddis, Phi Sigma Kappa alumnus, and Dot Sigh, former Zeta Tau Alpha, who were married Saturday night. Pi Beta Phi's welcomed back over the holidays Dotty Link, former pledge. Terry Smith, Phi Sigma Kappa, visited Corine Creighton in North Augusta during Thankagiving. SORORITIES WERE ACTIVE the past week, with parties for actives and pledges. Kappa Delta actives entertained the new pledges at an informal party Tuesday night, Nov. 22, at June Niggel's country home. .THE PLEDGES OF DELTA ZETA gave a party for the new pledges of other sororities the Thursday before Thanks giving. Sigma Chi Chapter Wins Scholarship Monetary Award Gamma Nu chapter of Sigma a Chi fraternity at USC has been given the Province Scholarship I Award by the Sigma Chi Founda tion for the academic year of 1948 '49, Robert Thoren, president, an nounced recently. The award is given annually to the clppter that stands first in scholarship in the N. C.-S. C. prov ince. Although the award is made on the basis of the achievements of the chapter, the monetary prize of $100 is awarded to a member of the chapter.
