Mass Marriage Ce
Square Dance To I
By BILL HAY and
JULIA WALKER
Something new has been added
to November. Anybody who reads
the Ounnies knows what we mean
for this is the season of Sadie
Hawkins Day.
It all started back in 1937 in the
typical mountain town of Dog
patch. The mayor of the com
munity planned a desperate scheme
to get his homely daughter, Sadie
Hawkins, married off. His Honor
decreed a footrace to be held be
tween all eligible males and fe
males. The gals were to chase
down the fellows and the unlucky
men that were kotched were to
marry the gals.
The modern version of this fun
f4st is not as diabolical with pen
alties for the pore men. If the
gal manages to snag the boy, he
must participate in a mock wed
ding with her.
This year the annual Sadie Haw
kins Day will be held at the Uni
versity on November 17. Matters
will git goin' at 5:00 p. m. on the
Horseshoe with his Honor, Mayor
Hawkins (as portrayed by our
registrar, Henry Srohecker) giv
ing the Sadie Hawkins Proclama
tion. After the race Marryin' Sam
. . . alias Prof. Heubert Spigner
. . . will tie the wedding knot for
all the hogtied males and their
.emales. This occurrence will come
off in front of the University
Chapel immediately after the race.
At 8:00 p. m. that evening a
big Square Dance .(Dogpatch
Style) will be held at the Field
House with all to pay admission
with a big smile. Pungent strains
of music will drift from a hill
billy ensemble and an able caller
will be on hand for the hoe-down.
