women, between 9 a. m. and noon
next Friday to submit her sorority
preferences. She will not talk to
anyone until noon of that day.

before noon Friday to Mrs. Childs.
The Pan-Hellenic council will
meet at 3 p. m. in Legare College,
Friday, Beth Fillingim, president,
has announced. At that time each
sorority will be given the names of
its new pledges, and the pledges
will be notified immediately by the
sorority.

Of Language
Study Given

Mrs. Ruby M. Ott, professor of
Spanish and French in the foreign
language department at the uni
versity has answered the impor
tant question all students ask at
least once during their four years
of college study: "What is the
value of taking a foreign langu
age?" Or, more bluntly, "What
good is this stuff gonna do me?"
To this Mrs. Ott replies it is
one step in the process of being
educated, for a knowledge of a
foreign language is an important
phase of a liberal education. One
without this knowledge is said to
have a "blind spot," or incomplete
ness, just as lack of mathematics
ur uLhti vital subjects would leave
a blind spot.
Study of a language has other
values, Mrs. Ott explained. It
helps to open fields of literature
and art between foreign countries,
and also helps create understanding
between different people. Also,
reading knowledge of a foreign
language is required for M.A. de
gree candidates.
Registration for Spanish and
French remains about equal at the
university, Mrs. Ott said. Popu
larity of Spanish rose over that of
French during the last war and
afterwards, but the two studies are
now on an equal basis once more.

Planned For USC
Jewish Students
The Tree of Life Sisterhood in
vites all Jewish students to a Hal
lowe'en party tomorrow night at
the home of Abe Jacobson, at 2900
Oceola Road, from 8 p. m. until
11p. m.
The party will begin with a
slash-lik barbeque and will be fol
lowed by games and entertainment.
Costumes will be optional.

youth group, Mr. J. Risk, Mr.
and Mrs. Abe Jacobson, Hugo
Bruck, and several student mem

'Washington Plan'
Named Beneficial

College Park, Md.-(I. P.)-A
new plan for sorority rushing,
called the "Washington Plan" and
adapted after a similar rushing
program successfully used at the
University of Washington. will be
come effective this semester at the
University of Maryland. The new
nine point plan will benefit the
sororities by helping them to fill
their quota system; it will not af
fect informal rushing. The plan is
as follows:
1. An Executive Committee of
15 girls, one from each sorority on
campus, will drop out of fall rush
ing and live in the dorms. During
the re h period the girls will not
wear their pins and will not have
any cvntact with sororities.
2. Representatives from the
Committee will hold individual con
rerences with each sorority two
days before rushing to determine
now many girla each desires to
iffiliate.
3. The size of a sorority's poten
:ial pledge class is determined by
he Executive Committee.
4. The number of invitations
lent by a sorority and the groups
affected is controlled. Those need
ing the most girls receive more
names.
5. A complete chart is kept on
cach rushee.
6. If a group gives a preference
bid, it is morally obliged to give
a final bid.
7. Any sorority not giving a
Ad to a legacy must tell the com
rnittee and they will talk to the
girl.
8. The giving out of bids will
e handled by non-affiliated secre
;aries as before.

The society hopes to soon become
a member of Tau Beta Pi, national
engineering fraternity.
Each year the Epsilon Lambda
Sigma award is given to the stu
dent in the school of engineering
who has achieved the highest
scholastic average for that year.
