On Thursday, Noveober 12
Wft, the *tate Agrieultural and
Kechanical Society, sponsors of the
State Fair, offered the first foot
ball gome between Clemson and
Carofta as snomething new in
grdA-tnd entertainment. The

first encounter and then the Tigers
went on a spree, winning the next
four games and were favored to
win a fifth when B6b Williams
mad Christie. Benet, Carolina
poaches, came out with s o me
=asling plays to upset the Bengali
12-6. The series was then discon.

When the games were resumed
In 1909, the Tigers won from the
Birds 6-0.
Prom 1909 till '31, things weren'l
too'good for the Gamecocks. Clem
son wen in '10, '11, '13, '14, '16
'17, '18, '19, '22, '23, '27, '28, '29

When Earl Clary, "the Ghosl
from Gaffney," joined the Carolina
squad in 1931, the Birds took thre

this streak in 1941. Carolina fans
presented him with a new Chryslei

That was Clemson in P28, 7-6. The
highest score ever run up in the
game was a 51-0 defeat by Clem
son in 1900. Since that time the
combined scores of both teams has
not equalled that figure. There
have been only two ties and both
of them were scoreless. There have
been but three games in which only
one touchdown was scored. Caro
lina holds the' margin there, too.
The average score Is Clemson 19.)7,
Carolina 8.95.
The game has always been pack
ed with drama, tenseness and com
edy. Outside of the big gate crash
ing several years ago, probably the
most comical event occurred in the
prohibition era. The story goes
that there was a drunk at the
game. Not just an ordinary drunk
but one with some class.
When the Clemson crack platoon
took the field during the half time
to go through their stuff, that gay
