Gamecocks Rest For Tigers
The Gamecocks will rest this week in anticipation for the
big game with the Clemson Tigers next week. The Birds
came out of the North Carolina game with no serious injuries
and should be ready for the hated Tigers next Thursday.
A few people were surprised at the Birds fine showing
against North Carolina last week but this corner expected it.
Coach Rex Enright had pointed his men for this game and
with any luck at all the Birds could have upset the highly
touted Tar Heels.
But that game is history now and next on the list is the
game of games in South Carolina, the annual state fair event
between the Birds and the Tigers. And right now we are
stepping out on a limb and picking the Birds to wii.
Various campus groups have lined up a number of inter
esting programs which should appeal to students, alumni,
and visitors alike. Last week this column suggested that Stu
dent Council adopt some plan for the formal initiation of
freshmen into the university. We suggested that the week
of the State Fair game be chosen as the week of orientation
and initiation. .
We are happy to report that Council has adopted such a
plan with an accompanying rat court and all the trimmings.
The plan as set forth by Council and under the joint direc
tion of Council and KSK, campus service fraternity, may be
found in its entirety elsewhere in this paper.
Our congrats to Council for making a move in this direc
tion. This part of campus life is something that has long
been missing from the Carolina scene.
No Gripes Left ,
There's almost nothing left to gripe about as Carolina
any more. The seating arrangement which was supposed to
be a pain in the neck to all concerned has proved itself work
able. It hasn't always been satisfactory but it has lessened
the confusion and long lines and four hour waits in the sta
dium which in years past were an inevitable part of the Caro
lina football games.
The band has emerged from the ugly duckling stage and
is now one of the biggest attractions that we can offer to
spectators coming here.
The football team ,although not winning any games has
played, for the most part, satisfactory football and there are
few complaints in their direction. Even school spirit has come
out of its darkened corner and is on its way to a place in the
light.
That leaves almost nothing to gripe about, Maybe there
will be soon, but at the moment the athletic situation and its
accompanying events is healthy and gives promise of staying
that way. This is the first time that the signs have pointed
this way since this writer has been a member of the student
body.
Fowl or Fair sends its congratulations to all of those people
who have had a hand in this evolution of the football and
athletic setup. The list is long and will grow longer as more
people continually lend their energies to the betterment of
Carolina athletics.
Lets Change the "T" Party
Last year the Blue Key chapters of Carolina and Clemson
originated a silver, loving cup to be ;>resented to the annual
winner of the State Fair game. This cup was presented at the
first BASKETBALL game of the season between the two
schools that was played in Columbia. This seems a needless
waste of time and appeal.
Why couldn't some arrangentent be worked out whereby
the winning team would receive the cup immediately after
the football game on Big Thursday.
This would add a great deal of interest to the cup which
is a symbol of friendship and good relations between the two
schools.
By waiting until basketball season to present the cup some
of the interest surrounding it has waned and it is no longer
as powerful as it might be in stimulating good will among
the student bodies.
Calendar of Events
Some of the better events that have been scheduled by the
campus groups in charge of activities for Big Thursday that
may be of interest w'ill be the rat court at five o'clock, Wed
nesday afternoon in front of McKissick Library. Here all
freshmen who have not performed duties which have been
assigned to them during the week will be tried and sentenced
or acquitted according to the evidence presented.
A pep rally and the annual shirttail parade and Tiger burn
ing will follow this. The freshmen football game is at eight
o'clock at the stadium.
Efforts are being made to have a mid-morning lunch served
on the campus Thursday morning. As yet nothing definite
has been decided but this sounds like a good idea to this
corner. Some campus group who may want to sponsor this
can get full details by seeing any student council member.
Last year this writer, who was working, had to pick up a
bag of sandwiches to take to the game. It would be infinitely
better if they were available on the campus this year.

Band Impressive

At Home Games
The band drew a lot of favor
able comment this week for its
novel presentation of its "Salute a
to the World Series" which was a
given during halftime of the
South Carolina - North Carolina a
football game here last week.
Beginning with a band rendi
tion of "Take Me Out to the Ball ]
Game" which was followed by a
barber shop quartet singing the
lyrics, different members of the
band spread out in simulated base- t
ball positions across the playing t
field and held an impromptu base
ball game. t
The quartet was especially well
received and succeeded in getting
many of the spectators at the foot- t
ball game to join in with them as
they sang.
At the Furman game, Furman s
was honored with the forming of r
a huge "F" on the Furman side
of the field. Also the Air R.O. i
