matches will begin in November.
Members of the team will be
chosen by competitive trials, Sgt.
Montgomery said. Candidates try
out in the basement of the' Armory
where there are firing ranges for
both rifles and pistols.
In the spring the rifle team will
compete in the annual Hearst
Trophy Match sponsored by Wil
liam Randolph Hearst. This match
is open to all colleges, universi
ties, and high schools, whether
they have an NROTC unit or not.
In the Secretary of the Navy
Matches only NROTC units may
enter. Each unit competing may
enter as many teams as it wishes.
In last year's matches the USC
pistol team placed eleventh in a
field of 30. The rifle team was
number 35 among 72 competitive
units.
"All of the postal matches are
run on the honor system," Sgt.
Montgomery said. Forms are sent
to each unit by the government.
The coach records the scores on
the forms and sends them to the
coach at the opposing school. Both
schools' forms are in the mail at
the same time. All the targets are
kept on file and are checked in
case of disagreement.
Sgt. Montgomery has invited 2a
units to compete with the rifle
team this year. He expects accept
ances from all of them. The sched
ule is tentatively arranged for:
Marquette Univ.-Nov. 12.
Univ. of Oklahoma-Feb. 18.
Ohio State-Nov. 19.
Yale University-Nov. 19.
