Freshmen U]
By Baby Hu:
By TOM PRICE
The freshmen opened their 1949
season by losing to the University
of Miami freshmen, 18-0, at Caro
lina Stadium last Friday night.
Both teams suffered from first
game jitters and fumbles and
penalties were in abundance to
mar the performance. The Biddies
were even more jittery than their
opponents, and fumbled a total of
eight times. Four of these fumbles
were recovered by Miami.
For the most part, the tackling
of both teams was good with
guards Fred Carter and Guy
Nichols, tackle Hugh Merck, and
ends Fred Duckett and Frank
Tobin showing up well for the
baby Gamecocks.
Duckett was perhaps the out
standing player on the field until
he injured his knee late in the first
period. He reentered the game in
the third quarter, but his knee
gave way while going down under
a punt and he had to be carried
from the field. He is expected to
be out of action for at least two
weeks.
Hootie Johnson and Buster
Brown were the best in a Biddie
backfield that looked woefully im
potent on offense. Johnson broke
into the secondary several times
and might have gone all the way
on more than one occasion if he
had received some down field
blocking. Brown looked good at
the quarterback slot and was es
pecially deceptive with his hand
offs to Johnson.

and Miami recovered.
Neither team was able to gain
and the ball changed hands sev

ended with Miami in possession of
the pigskin on the Biddies' 10 yard

On the third play of the second
quarter Sander crashed over for
the score. After two penalties
placed the ball back to Q 'weife
a pilss for the extra point was
short.
Later in the period, Miami drove
down to the Carolina 14, but penal
ties set them back to the 40 and
the first half ended with the score
6-0 in favor of the baby Hurricane.
The Biddies drove to the Miami
22 in the third quarter, but the
drive bogged down and the Flor
idians took over.
Miami ended the scoring for the
night by grinding out five consecu
tive first downs and driving 58
yards to score mid-way in the
fourth quarter. DeGai elle scored
on a short run and then added the
extra point from placement.
The next home game for the
freshmen is Wednesday night, Oc

Filled With Sophis
Approximately half of the 50
odd men who rep)orted to Coach
Rex Enright at the beginning of
the season were sophomores. Big
John Boyle and Steve Wadiak head
the list with such men as Paul
Stephens, Wilbur Newvman, Bob
Kahle, Vince Gargano, Larry
Smith, Jack Mitchell, Bayard Pick
ett, Tommy Woodlee, and Chuck
Prezioso backing them up.
This heavy number of sopho
mores bears out Enright's state
ment that he is building for the
future.
The Gamecocks as a squad hail
from 11 states, all of them east
of the Mississippi. South Carolina
leads with North Carolina and
Georgia runninig secondlt and third
respectively.
Enright has been worried about
the lack of experience on the
sophomore's part but with one
game uinder their belts these boys
will be counted heavily on the
rest of the year.

Duke And UNC
In Lead Roles
In Conference
By LLOYD HUNTINGTON
The cat is out of the bag and
with most of the secrets about
Southern Conference teams now
known the forecast for this week
is not as dark as last week when
16 Conference teams stepped into
intersectional games and got their
ears pinned back.
Duke and North Carolina who
ran up easy wins over conference
opponents Richmond and North
Carolina State respectively, take
on a couple of big boys. Duke on
the upsurge with two easy early
wins travels to Knoxville to take
on Bob Neyland's Tennessee Vol
unteers. North Carolina and Char
ley Justice stay in their own back
yard to play host to Wally Butts'
ambitious Georgia Crackers.
The Wake Forest Demon Deac
ons still staggering from a last
quarter Doak Walker touchdown
pass which cost the Deacons a
possible victory last week over the
powerful Southern Methodist Mus
tangs leaves early Friday for their
game with Boston College.
DLuke struggling hard to be
come once again the feared Blue
Devils of pre-war days squashed
the Richmond Spiders 67-0 last
week. The Devils, however, are ex
pected to meet a tarter in the
Tennessee outfit and may find
themselves knocked from the un
defeated ranks by Saturday night.
Tennessee showed a lot of power
in crushing Mississippi State last
week and will probably be too
much for Wallace Wade's not coin
pletely revamped Blue Devils.
North Carolina on the strength
of the mighty mite, Charley Jus
u be favored to stick the
Georgia Bulldogs. Georgia with
two minor victories is still un
tested while the Tar Heels ran up
against a good one in a game but
outmanned N. C. State eleven last.
week and came out .thro touch'
downs better. Justice was his usual
u;i'iant self and paced the Chapel
Hill boys to a 26-6 victory.
Wake Forest is highly favored to
take the Boston College outfit in
tow. Wake proved that they are
among the South's better teams by
outplaying Doak Walker and the
SMU Mustangs for three quarters.
Walker showed his stuff in the
fourth quarter by passing to half
back Kyle Rote for the winning
touchdown. The Wakes, however,
led up to this point 7-6 and the
Bostonians are not figured to stop
thenm tomorrow.
Clemson, last year's Conference
winner also invaded the Southwest
andl sawv their 15-game winning
streak snap)ped by Rice Univer
sity. The Clemsons were complete
ly outplayed and showed none of
the finesse wvhich last year took
them through an undefeated season
and and Orange Bowvl victory over
Missouri.
This week the Tigers take on
the North Carolina State Wolfpack
which played North Carolina to
a standstill last Saturday until
wveakening in the fourth quarter.
On the strength of respective
showings the Wolfpack isfavoredl
to take Frank Howard's Tigers.
State Glames
Newberry and Wofford jumped
into the lead in state competition|
by bowling over High Point and(|
Howard last week to give both
teams an unblemish~ed record.
Newberry behind the strong
right arm of Henry "Slingshot''
Witt came through with a sur
prising 25-0 victory over the High
Point Bisons. Wofford undefeated
last year kept the recordI clean by
dlowning Howardl University.
Both teams will get severe tests

Groups Suggest
Caps Be Worn
Until Fair Week
The student council which met
this week in Sloan college re
quested that all freshmen be re
quired to wear ratcaps at the Caro
lina-Furman game tonight.
This is the first time that fresh
men have been asked to wear their
caps at a varsity game, but last
week all the frosh wore their fa
miliar maroon caps with the black
C at the Carolina-Miami freshman
tussle.
During the past few days vari
ous campus groups have suggested
that all freshmen wear their caps
untill the Carolina-Clemson contest
on Big Thursday. If Enright's foot
ball warriors should win from the
Tigers, then the freshmen will re
move their caps. If the Birds lose
the Frosh would wear them until
Christmas holidays.
No action has b6n taken by
council.
