The catching problem was set
tled when Jack Couch played the
position as if he were made for
it and proceeded to slam out his
usual long hits.
Rusty Stephens was more than
a replacement for Bargiacci.
Stephens started off slow and
ran second to Red Wilson in the
hitting. Wilson, who had left the
squad in 1947 in disgust because
he couldn't hit, was burning the
league up and hit well over .400
the first quarter of the season.
Mixed in with his singles were sev
eral doubles and a homer and he
stayed near the top in RBI's.
Harry Parone, 1948 captain,
didn't play the first several games
because his eligibility case was be
ing considered by the conference.
Camp and Sherer were backed 3
up by good, solid hitting through- d
out the first six games. Sherer t
was credited with three wins while
Camp won two and lost one.
But a trip to North Carolina
April 14 was disastrous for the
Birds. They dropped two to Duke
and one to UNC.
The double win over Furman led
to another streak, this time seven
straight. Clemson halted it May
6 at Clemson as Camp bowed to the
Tigers 6-5. The drawling right
hander, nicknamed "Satchel" and
"Wild Bill" by his admirers, lost
again a week later, this time to
Furman, 1-1.
Camp and Sherer, by now, were
showing signs of the strain. Sherer
was knocked out in the Clemson
game and he had been hit pretty
hard before then. Bo Hagan came
to the staff's rescue as he fashion
eu a neaL 9- win over r urman,
keeping Carolina in the Big Four
running with a 9-2 record against
Clemson's 8-1.
Of the 19 games played so far,
Sherer has a 4-1 record, Hagan
1-0, Camp 7-4, Cy Szakacsi 1-1,
and Jim Fisher and Walker An
derson haven't a decision.

The Gamecock nine tangles with
Clemson College in a two-game
series beginning this afternoon at
3 o'clock at Davis field to decide
the Big Four championship. The
teams meet again tomorrow after
noon to close out the 1949 season. I
Ace Bill Camp, who's won seven
and lost four, will start today, with
Bo Hagan getting the nod tomor
row. Frank Sherer and John
Szakacsi will be around for relief
duty.
The Birds slipped to second
place behind Clemson by splitting
a two-game series with Furman's
Palladians while the Tigers were
whipping The Citadel twice at
Clemson last weekend. Clemson's
record in Big Four competition is ]
8-1 while Carolina has a 7-2 rec- 1
ord. Clemson needs only a split
to clinch the title, but Carolina
must win both games.
