May Be Possible
Within 25 Years
Rocket trips to the moon within
25 years are a distinct possibility,
according to Albert L. Ragsdale,
physics instructor. "Man may be
closer to accomplishing these in
terplanetary trips than many real
ize. Numerous obstacles remain to
be overcome, but much has already
been learned in research speeded
up by war demands," he said.
Problems in developing fuels and
metal alloys with extra strong
qualities are two of the most press
ing puzzles today, the physics
teacher pointed out. They directly
affect construction details and
constantly force the redrawing of
plans when new discoveries are
made.
Many fuel combinations have
been tried in an effort to get the
greatest driving power from the
smallest quantity. Very good
progress has been achieved, but
more work needs to be perfected
in order to obtain the push neces
sary to get beyond the earth's
gravitational attraction, Ragsdale
explained.
Meteors and cosmic rays and
their behavior in the space beyond
the atmosphere are of equal con
cern to scientists. Countless mil
lions of meteors and fragments fly
through space and present a haz
ard to any rocket ship. The small
est object could hit hard enough
to destroy the ship completely.
Whether or not those flying pieces
would be avoided is not yet known,
Ragsdale declared.

Prof. Overby expressed hope of
conciliation between Russia and
the western powers.
