MeltonField; GateBought By Students By JANE DOWE Either the legislatuVe or an alumnus is responsible for most building that has taken place here. Melton Gate is an exception. In 1927 the social cabinet under took the project of buying a gate for the new athletic field on Green street to be a memorial to Dr. William Melton, president from 1922-1926. The goal was set at $1700, and each student was asked to contribute $1 if possible. This student project received I much publicity during that spring. All campus organizations made contributions, and the names of donors were printed in the Game cock. Money was accepted only from students. When the term closed in June, I the memorial gate had been com- I pleted. It was built of hand- I wrought iron, with brick columns on either side of the gateway. On each column was placed a lime stone urn, on which was construct ed a table telling the story of the gate, which became the main en trance to the field.
