By BUZZ BUSBEE ELECTIONS AND INITIATIONS! !!-Officers of Kappa Delta sorority who will take office April 1, are Irene Herty, president; Anne Goodwin, vice-president; Jane Dowe, sec retary; Ann Craig, treasurer; Patsy Taylor, editor; and Nancy MacEachern, rush chairman . . . Frank Hard has been elected president of the Independents . . . Other of ficers. are Frank Sanders, 1st vice-president; Charles Clark, 2nd vice-president; Bill Stanford, secretary; Tommy Ballew, treasurer; John Whalen, public relations officer New members voted in at the last meeting were Paul Greer and John Logothetis. This week is "Delta" week for the Tri Delts . . . Tuesday night there was a party for the pledges. Wednesday night there was a party in the country in honor of the pledges and TONIGHT . . . the pledges will become new initiates . . . Those receiving the badge will be Nelle Cassady, Lib Cald well, Blanche Davis, Betsy Knowlton, Ann Kenny Bell, Lily Groover, and Mary Hyer . . . Alpha Tau Omega fraternity held initiation last week. The initiates were Sidney B. Jones and Lane Bonner . . . In addition to the initiation Reginald Dusenbury was elected vice-president to replace John Lindsay, who is not in school this semester. The fra ternity agreed to contribute to the support of a foreign student who will attend the university next year. AS USUAL, MANY PEOPLE SOUGHT ENTERTAIN MENT ELSEWHERE!!! Lambda Chi Pat King attended a dance at Winthrop last week-end . .. Also visiting the big city of Rock Hill for the dance were Lawton Wiles, John Bradham, Billy Thomas and Phil Sawyer .. . Dick Edens, Fred Tolly and Gus Hoffmeyer, Lambda Chis, went to a dance at Coker . . . Jeanne Gill and Sylvia Kelley have jour neyed down Citadel way for two weekends in succession ... Tri Delts Ann Porcher Zeigler and Jeanne Rickenbaker are still a little dazed from their trip to the mid-winter dances at the University of Virginia. They report that the dances were really "fine." . . . This week-end Tri Delts Mary Louise Gaillard and Lib Caldwell will attend the Mid winters at Wake Forest. The music will be furnished by Elliott Lawrence ... Betty Ortmann, DZ, went down to the Citadel dance-also Dotsy Lloyd, ZTA, and Boodie Kinsey . . . N.: C. State welcomed KDs Hazel Porter and Sally Stevens for the dances last week . . . Tonight KD Carolyn Bynum will-attend the Cotillion dance in Darlington. PiKAs Bill Rogers, Charles Watson, and Joe Ruth went to the Winthrop dances on the 26th . . . Feliz McDonald, "Blookie" Schooler, Jack Blount and Dick Walters spent the weekend at "Thd Towers," Pawley's Island ... Bill King and Buddy Boulware represented Lambda Chi at the Southern Conclave . . . The fraternity recently pledged Buddy Hendricks and Al Barfield. In a poll conducted by the students of Coker College, for women that is, to determine their favorite college men, the University of South Carolina males took SECOND place!!! Of all schools to be in the first place, CLEMSON WAS! What a crushing blow to the EGO of you men-In a similar poll conducted by the men of Clemson, the Carolina Co-eds didn't even rate! Winthrop was first and Anderson college was second.. . HOW 'BOUT THAT??? The heckling of the Ku Klux Klansmen last week seemed to have hit the Northern newvspapers and radio stations with some exaggeration and sensationalism . . . One student, Ervin McLendon, journalism major from Hlartsville, received a call from his girl-friend who lives in Great Neck, N. Y., Thursday night. She wanted to knowv if he was all "in one piece." She said that the p)aPers and radio made the hap penings at the klan meeting seem somewhat "bloody" toward the university students. He spent many minutes explaining 'that he was not one of the so-called "hecklers" and that i t was not as bad as the Northern papers had exaggerated. That is one way to GET PUBLICITY for our school in the. North!!! PARiTlES!! !-The Lambda Chi p)ledges will entertain the actives and their dlates, of course, with a party Saturday night .. . The pledge chapter of Pi Kappa Phi. gave their actives a wiener roast at Sesqui the 23rd. Fine time was had by all-in fact, it was such a good party that at 10:00 when the park closed everyone adjourned to "Joe's" to con tinue the fun. The blankets were let't in the cars, though. ...The pledges of all the fraternities wvere really "on the ball" . .. The pledges of Phi Kappa Sigma honored their ac tives with a stag party last Saturday night. It is rumored *that there was plenty of beer for everyone-and some took advantage of the situation . . . Gibson's Pond was the scene of SAEs partying Saturday night. The pledges had a fish fry in honor of the actives and the juke box furnished good music for dancing afterwards . . . Mitch Graham hurt his 'ankle during the course of the evening. He says it was playing softball and that the hill was too steep . . . Could 'he have been chasing some cute date??? New initiates of AD)Pi sorority as of February 23rd are Jane Bailey, Margaret Ellen Barker, Mary Ann Elliott, Meredyth Goettee, Paula Harris, Gene Ann Strickland, Kath leen Sims and Suzanne Lewis. After the initiation, Rowena Dubose was repledged and welcomed back into the chapter. . . . An initiation banquet was held and a skit and original songs were presented . . . "Wimpy'' Webb was recently ap pointed rush chairman of Delta Zeta sorority. LOST AND ACQUIRED! !!--Pi Kappa Phi Bill Thomas pinned Melrose Straughan of Wilmington, N. C. . . . Sara Cook of Lexington is now wearing the engagement ring of Pi Kap J. D. Loyd. There won't be many "single" brothers left when Pi Kap Gene Spencer marries Janet Pairsons, a senior at Furman on June 9 . . . also Alum Gettis Wood and K. D. alum Mary Vin Tucker will tie the "big knot" here in Columbia on May 14th . . . Ralph Kennedy, Phi Kappa Sigma alum, and Jo-Ann Karesh will be married March 11th . . . A bit of pertinent information has come into the new's which should satisfy the curiosity of many of the students who eat at Steward's Hall, I understand. This is it --Berrien Maya Cheatham and Marion Tolar have become engaged and will be married in the near future... MORE TRIPS .. . Joe 1 Cranford's Office Handles Publicity Throughout State "It's quite a new experience for me to be on this side of the inter view," commented Robert J. Cran ford, veteran newspaperman auld new head of the university news service. Before taking this po sition in December, Cranford was with the Associated Press in Char lotte and Columbia. "The main function of the news service," Cranford explained, "is to keep the people of South Caro lina informed as to their state uni versity. We are the school's pub lic relations for the state." he said. ~ The news service uses a mailing list to all newspapers in the state, both daily and weekly. News items, events, announcements and pic tutes relating to the university comprise the service to these pa pers. In addition, the Associated Press and the United Press receive selected bulletins. "Among other minor duties we are host to any newspaper, maga zine or radio personnel visiting on the campus," Cranford said. A native North Carolinian, Cranford graduated from Duke university in 1928 at the age of 19. He is now living in Columbia with his wife and daughter. A recent addition by Cranford's office is a hometown service which sends short items about stu dents to their hometown paper. Phi Sigma Ko ppc:s To Have Banquet At Wade Hampton; Gamma Triton chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa will have an infor mal banquet and a semi-formal dance in comnmemoration of its founder's (lay on March 12. The banquet and dance will be held at the Wade Hampton hotel ballroom. The banquet will be held from 7 to 8 p. m. and the. dance from 9 to 12. Eddie Helms and his orches'tr:, will play. Paul Tong, Chinese Christian minister, discussed Epis copal work in China with the Can terbury club Sunday night at the Trinity parish house. Rev. Tong left China in Janu ary to visit and study churches in America. His visit in Columbia was sponsored by the missions de partment of the Women's Aux iliary of the Episcopal church. The Rev. Beth Fillin gim president of Pan-Hellenic, met with the presidents of all so rorities. Girls who want to go through rushing will register Wednesday, March 9, at Pan-Hellenic station in Maxey. The fee will be $2. Dean Childs will meet with rushees on Friday, March 11, at 5 p. im. in the chapel. The Pan-Hellenic tea on Sun day. March 13. from 5 to 7 p. m. in Sims lobby will open rush week. Routine parties will be held Mon day and Tuesday nights. Prefer ential parties will be held on Wed nesday and Thursday. Each so rority will make a preferential list which must be turned in to Dean Childs by 9 a. im. A committee composed of the president and vice president of Pan-Hellenic and Dean Childs will sort bids and Put them in separate envelopes for each girl. All bids will be on prepared slips of invita tion'made by each sorority. Pan Hellenic will be present then. All decisions must be hade by 3 p. i. Penalty for talking during the de cidiig period will be that the rushee must wait until the next rush week to make her decision. After all bids are turned in, one delegate from each sorority will remain to get a complete list of decisions made by the rushees. All girls who have made decisions will go to their respective sorority rooms. No girl who has an average be low 5.0 on 12 semester hours can go through rush week. No men will be used for rushing, and rushees will not converse with men during this period. There will be no conversations between rushees and sorority girls unless two sororities are represented. There will be no visiting in soror ity rooms by rughees except for scheduled parties, and no spending the night in rooms of sorority girls.
