Football Drills
Hard work, a little experiment
ing, and more hard work- still
seems to be the formula for Caro
lina's football team as they reach
ed the half-way- mark in spring
practice.
The hard bruising work is evi
denced by the minor injuries and
tired, dragging feet at the end of
practice. Coich Enright is de
termined that whatever is lacking
in the '49 edition of the Game
cocks, it won't be- good physical
condition.
The biggest experiment is the
switching of Bishop Strickland to
fullback. For the last two years
Strickland has been running at
halfback and has been considered
one of the better running backs in
the state from that position. The
loss &f Olaud Harrison, and the
threat of recurrence of old injuries
hanging over Bill Rutledge and
Ed Jackson, has made Enright go
looking for a plunging fullback.
' Starting in his own back yard,
he came up quickly with a good
answer to his problem. With Steve
Wadiak and sophomore Tommy
Woodlee to go at the halfback
posts, Strickland, with power to
burn, should lose none of his value

The most valuable player award

metto theater.
M. S. Suggs, city manager of
the theater, has donated the tro
phy. He planned to make the
presentation immediately after the
football season, but postponed it
when several of the players could
not attend at that time.
Jake Penland, sports editor of
The State newspaper, will make
the award. Then he will introduce
Dumas Turner, business manager
of the athletic department of the
university, who in turn will intro
duce the individual players as they
come' on the stage.
Penland will then interview Head
Coach Rex Enright on the pros
pects for the coming football sea
son. Enright has been unusually
mum during spring training so this
sition. This switch should give
the Birds a much better balanced
ground attack.

will probably be the first official 9
information given on the team's
progress.
Last year the trophy went to
Claud "Red" Harrison, fullback
and stellar linebacker, who also
received the Jacobs' Blocking
Trophy for the best blocker in
South Carolina.
A secret ballot was taken at
Steward's hall immediately fol
lowing the fooball season with
each member of the team voting.
The results have not been pub
lished' although several possibili
ties might be named. Harrison,
again, has been mentioned as a
contender along with another red
head, end Roger Wilson. Bishop
Strickland and Steve Wadiak, the
two brilliant halfbacks should be
counted in the running also. De
spite these speculations, the iden
tity of the recipient will remain a
secret until the trophy is pre
sented.
The Palmetto theater donates
the trophy each year and this is (
one of the few awards that is
given on the basis of a team vote.
