Bird Trackmen
To Face Rough
1949 Schedule
The Gamecock track team, reel
ing from the losses of Norman
"Scooter" Rucks, 440-yard star,
and Ed Coleman, shot' put and
javelin standout of last year, will
face a rough nine-meet schedule
beginning April 2.
Carolina's new track coach,
Weems Baskin, will have to build
from the bottom up. He'll count
on several freshmen stars to bol
ster his squad, but he's still in
pretty poor shape for the '49
campaign.
Baskin would not single out any
individuals this early but he said
there were possibilities among the
material that reported and he ex
pected to win a few meets, at least.
The Gamecock trackmen are
concentrating on one main object
at the present time-that's the
Southern Invitational Indoor Meet
to be held at the University of
North Carolina in Chapel Hill on
February 26. Baskin hasn't des
ignated just who will make the
trip from the Gamecock's squad,
but he reports that at least five or
six Gamecocks will be entered.
Candidates for the squad have
been working out each afternoon
around Davis Field and the few
prospects that Baskin can count
upon should be in good condition
for the coming season. Baskin
takes over his job from Sterling
Dupre, who resigned to accept a
simPar position at the University
of Florida following last season.
After the indoor meet this
month, the Birds will compete with
the following teams:
April 2-University of Georgia,
Columbia.
April 9-Davidson, Davidson,
N. C.
April 16-North Carolina State,
Raleigh. N. C.
April 23-Clemson, Clemson,

Interest In
By JOE MOLONY
There's only one national pas
time-that's baseball. The familiar
cry of 'take me out to the ball
game" comes to every sports lov
er's heart when warm weather
comes around. And the Univer
sity of South Carolina -is no ex
ception.
Of course, Carolina's indoor
teams haven't been producing as
fans expected and the students are
anxious to forget about the dis
astrous basketball road trip, the
4-4 boxing tie with The Citadel
and the humiliating defeat handed
our swimming team by Georgia.
And, naturally, the fans will pur
sue other fields of sports interest.
That's where the Gamecock
baseb)all team conmes into promi
nence. True, the Gamecocks' 1948
record wvasni't impressive and
Coach Ted Petoskey hasn't many
new additions this year, but Amer
ica's favorite sport still draws the'
attention of many Carolina sports
fans.
Being the site of numerous ma
.or' league farm club's spring
training camps. the state will be
alive with baseball activity this
sp)ring. And Petoskey has indi
cated his team will play as many
exhibition games with the pros as
is humanly possible. Playing
against these pros, Petoskey will
have a formidable run-getting
lineup, but a weak pitching staff,
a weakness that brought on a six
wvon, 14-loss record last year.
There may be a few minor
changes in the Bird lineup this
year, brought about by Freddie
Bargiacchi's inclination toward
professional baseball instead of
college ball, but the nucleus of the
team will remain the same. The
only newcomer who is practically
a sure h)et for firstestring is Bill
Swan, former Wofford outfielder,
who'll fill Barney Dusenbury's:

will be switched to second base,
Bargiacchi's old position.
A famliar figure will be patrol
ing left field this spring--Jack
Couch. He earned a letter in 1947,
led the team in slugging and had
>ne of the deadliest throwing arms
in collegiate ball. Petoskey has
been using Couch as a catcher,
but the big, heavy-set football
halfback is really an outfielder
ind he'll probably be used there
this year.
If any one were to ask for a
starting baseball lineup today, it
rnight read like this: F. F. Younge,
ratching; Bo Hagan, Cy Szakacsi
>r Bill Camp, pitching; Joe John
iton on first; Barney Dusenbury
)n second; Jim Pinkerton on third;
iohnny Sykes on short and in the
>utfield would be: left field, Jack
louch; center field, Bill Swan, and
-ight field, Harry Par one.

Birds Are Out
For Revenge
Against Terps
Frank Johnson's basketeers, re
mindful of a 20-point loss to
Maryland in Collegre Park, Md.,
last week, will be out for revenge
tomorrow night at 8 o'clock when
they meet the Terps in the field
house.
The Gamecocks need only one
more impressive victory in their
.next five Southern Conference
games to be in the running for a
conference tournament berth. A
win over The Citadel might not
be sufficient, but if the locals can
take either Maryland or North
Carolina, whom they meet Satur
day and Monday nights in the
field house, then a tournament
spot would be a cinch.
Coach Johnson could offer no
excuses for his team's poor show
ing against George Washington,
Maryland and Furman-in that
order-but he's still sure the boys
will be in there fighting all the
way.
The recent road trip seemed to
prove that big Jim Slaughter is
the key to Carolina's basketball
success. As Slaughter goes, so
goes the team. Both the Terps
and the Colonials managed to hold'
Slaughter intact, while forward
Henry Martin surged ahead of the
big boy in state scoring, and in so
doing, they stymied the Carolina
offense. Furman had no such
luck,, but still the locals couldn't
get going and the Paladins breezed
to a win in Greenville.
The Johnsonmen were all steam
ed up prior to their trip to Yan
keeland, but now that their sails
have been deflated and the bubble
has burst, there's no telling what
to expect when Maryland, North
CroinaandDaidaon invadb %JG
lumbia. If the team can regain its
lost spirit, then one victory
wouldn't be too remote, but if the
Northern trip has a lasting effect,
then Carolina had better forget
about the conference tournament.
Johnson's - starting lineup will
probably remain the same against
Maryland tomorrow night. He'll
use Henry Martin and Red Cole
man at forwards; Jim Slaughter
at center; and Cy Szakacsi and
Harry Parone at guards.
Earl Dunham's freshmen will
play the preliminary game against
a local team beginning at 6:30 p.
ml. The Biddies' :tarting lineup
will probably be: LaTorre and
Kahle at forwards; Greene at cen
ter and Boyle and Cox at guards.
The frosh will be putting an un
defeated record on the line, having
won from Citadel and Clemson,
state schools, and several prep and
semi-pro teams over the season.
Hard-wvorking Lip LaTorre at for
wvard, Don Cox at guardl and Bob
Kahle have continually bolstered
the Biddies' attack with a fancy
brand of offensive basketball, and '3
again they'll be favored to win.
