Twenty Baseball
Hopefuls Report
In Field House
'wetity candidates reported to
baseball coach, red Petoskey, Mon
day afternoon in the Field House
for the fiist day of baseball prae
tice.
In1fielders, piteners and catchers
vere given the call and Petoskey
immediately put them to work on
fundamentals and form, phases ad
mittedly neglected last year. The
players wo.'t u'.e a ball until a
week or so, Petoskey said. The
squad will begin practice on Davis
field around the first of March.
Many familiar faces were on
hand for first-day workouts. Short
stop Johnny Sykes; Joe Johnston,
first basemain; Barney Dusenbury,
out fielder, vlio will be converted
to second base this season and
pitchers Frank Sherer, John Mace
and Dean Rivers.
.Jack Couch, hard-hitting out
fielder who paced Bird hitters in
1947, has beein switched to catcher.
Accordinig to Petoskey, Couch may
be the man for the job.
This season will be the first
played under the Big Four confer
eniee setup. The Big Four includes
Clemson. Citadel, Furman and
South Caroliia. Carolina has
scheduled only these teams in the
state.
Petoskey hopes to schedule prae
tice games with several of the pro
Fessional teams which are trainiing
in the state prior to opening the
season with Michigan State in
March.
In addition to the veteran pitch
ers, four freshman candidates re
ported for practice. The freshmen
will offer ample competition for
the varsity in practice games,
Petoskey claimed. "They will be a
great help to Carolina's baseball
club," the coach said, "and by the
look~ -f these few frosh 'ho've
reported, we should have a fine
club by 1950. In the meanwhile I'm
still lookiig for a couple of good
iine-innitng pitchers to help us
out."
Petoskey urges all students in
terested in coming out for baseball,
especially pitchers, catchers and
infielders, to report to the field
house any afternoon between 2 and
3 o'clock. Candidates must bring
t heirI own riubber-soled shoes and
glo'v es.

of this same Furman team. A con
ference record of four wins against
one loss had them soundly en
trenched in second place in South
ern Conference competition, and a
bid to the tournament at Durham
in March was practically assured.
Then th bubble burst.
After exhibiting streaks of near
brilliance against the Tigers and
tile Hurricane the Birds traveled to
Washington Monday night to meet
George Washington University,
generally rated second t.o North
Carolina State in the Conference.
The Colmials lived up to their
advance billing and crushed the lo
cal cagers .under the avalanche of
anl 91-51 score.
The next night thle University
of Maryland Terrapins duplicated
tle Colonials' feat and smashed the
Birds 79-49.
George Washington was sup
posed to will according to the ex
perts although no one would have
thought they would defeat the
Hirds by 30 points. Yet the Colo
nials were at highly-polished outfit,
with plenty of height and experi
ence, and a single lefeat-even one
as stiulining as .s, could have been
written o' as a bad night for the
Hilids. The loss to Maryland was
unexpected and ill some quarters
un forgivable.
Big Jimmy Slaughter, the Birds'
skyscraper center, who had paced
the team all year, suffered 1's
worst two performances s-gainst
the Coloninis and tile Terrapins.
Against - George Washington lie
shot only four points and the next
night against Maryland the tall,
lanky Roanoke, Va., boy tipped in
nine, his second low of the season.
Slaughter, previous to these two
games, had a game point average
of slightly over 16, and a seasoirs
total which put him at. the top of
the state marksmen and high up
among the conference leaders.
The brightest star in the other
wise dull Carolina galaxy was for
W-1rd Henry Martin, who set some
thing of a local record by netting
32 points last week against Clem
son. Martin continued to prove
that he's one of the best in the Con
ference by shooting 22 points
against George Washington and 14
against Maryland.
1omorrow night at Furmanl the
chiph;s will lIe down for the Johnson
maen. Only a week ago, the Birds
defeated Furman with ease as Cy
Szakacsi tu rned in his best pier
formanc*e on thle local court. The
urman team lackedl finesse andl di
rectilol and( a great amounmt of the
st u f f of which gotod basketball
teams are madle. In Textile Hall
the Hurricane miay prov'e more
formidable. They will be playing on
heir own courat before a p)artisan
crowd. This could make a great
dheal of dIifferenace in a team that
early' ini the seatson was supposed
to lbe the statte's strlongest.
Thme Hi rds will lbe playinig unider
a severe mental st raiin. This is a
crucial poinlt for the John11son) teanm.
A loss wotuld make it difficult in
dleed( for the Gamecocks to gaina an
inavitationi to the Conference tour
namlent-t he mark of a successful
seasona for southern teams. A win
would p)ut the Hi rds ini a monre fa
