Stringer Adds Mu( To Strong Carolin By DICK CAVALLINI Joe Stringer, probable starter for the Gamecock boxing team at 125 pounds, began his fistic career while in grammar school at -the age of 12. In 1988 Stringer entered a state junior high school-high school boxing tournament in Mis sissippi, and won the 65-75 pound championship for his home town, Yazoo City. Three years later he fought his way to another Mississippi high school championship but this time at 95-100 pounds. In 1942, Yazoo City declined an invitation to the state tournament but in 1943 Stringer became the 112-pound champion of Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, and Arkansas. The slugger from Yazoo City continued fighting after joining the army, and while at Chanute F.ield, Ill., he won the central Il linois golden gloves championship at 118 pounds. Joe has won a title in every tournament he has en tered. While in the army he was a physical instructor, and at Chan ute Field he was the boxing coach in charge of promoting boxing s)hows. Stringer got Barney Ross to referee the bouts in one of these shows. Stringer fought one bout on the university's team last year, that against John Lindsey of Clemson. Lindsey's eye was cut in the first round and the bout was declared a draw according to collegiate box ing rules. Intramural Fot Begin Play Mo The intramural front will bc next several months. Two leagues were formed. Pi Kappa Alpha, Lambda Chi Alpha, Kappa Sigma, Sigma Nu, Kappa Alpha, and Phi Kappa Sigma, will form league one. League two includes: Phi Sigma Kappa, Pi Kappa Phi, Pi Epsilon Phi, Sigma Chi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and Pi Lambda Phi. The teams will have eight men and play touch football instead of tackle. The fraternity schedule for the first week: Monday, Pi Kappa Alpha vs Phi Kappa Sigma; Pi Kappa Phi vs Phi Sigma Kappa. Tuesday, Lambda Chi Alpha vs Kappa Alpha; Pi Epsilon Phi vs Pi Lambda Phi. Wednesday, Sigma Chi vs SAE. Thursday, Kappa Sigma vs Sigma Nu. Fri day, Pi KA vs Lambda Chi Alpha. With Stringer leading the fighting Gamecocks at 125 pounds, follow ed by Pete Campassi, last year's 125-pound Southern conference tournament champion, at 180; promising Grady Decell at 185, and Ray Avant, voted the outstand ing fighter Qf the 1948 Southern conference tournament, at 145, Jess Alderman's coaching worries will be confined to the heavier weights in 1949. Badminton Games To Be Held Monday A field of 18 participants have entered an intramural badminton tournament which will be held De cember 6, 7 and 8 at the university gym, director Joe Grugan an nounced this week. The schedule of first round matches: December 6, Meredith Davidson vs John Hutchinson, P. N. Arledge vs Clayde Green and S. E. Welborn vs Bill Brown. De cember 7: Lloyd Chinnes vs Al Thomas, R. C. Shealy vs Bill Won ders and Charlie Goforth vs Jimmy Kincaid. December 8, Dick Single ton vs Ken Dean, James Meri wether vs George Roth and H. M. Riley vs. Roy Guest. All students interested in offi ciating for these games are re quested to contact Joe Grugan at the university gymnasium. The games will be played on Davis and Melton fields. The school volleyball champion ship will be settled this afternoon when the Carovets play KA at 4:130 p. m. on Davis Field. Carovets clinched the independ ent title by defeating Tenement 24%, 15-0 and 15-13. KA went to the finals by beating Sigma Nu. Each team will be presented a loving cup by intramural director Grugan immediately after the game. Carolina Ali-Stars Begin Drills Here The South Carolina-North Caro lina college all-stars have been working out on Melton Field for the past week in preparation for their game with the Charlotte Clippers December 11 at Charlotte. Coaches Rex Enright of South Carolina and Peahead Walker of Wake Forest will head the all stars, who beat the Clippers last year. Following its practices here, the team will go to Charlotte, N-. C., next Thursday where it will close out practice sessions. The Variety Club sponsors the annual clash which has developed into a close, friendly rivalry. This is the second year that Enright and Walker have coached the all stars against the Clippers. The Carolina mermen have two more tentative out-of-state meets and will match their aquatic skill with all the state teams on a home and home basis. The state meet will again be held at the University natatoAlum with five teams ex pected to send representatives. Swimmers returning from last year are: Marshall Upton, captain, Johnny James, Bob Kay, Quitman Marshall, Spruce McCain, Derwin Lamb, Howard King, John Cantey, and Jess Tipping. Buddy Langston hds been re elected manager this year and !-arl Skidmore, Jr., has been retained as assistant coach. The team thus far has gone through a conditioning schedule which featured loosening-up exer cises in the gym, working with cables, running, practicing with the kick boards, and smoothing out turns and starts. Boxing Tear Hard Workc Jess Alderman had his boxers working out harder than ever this week in the gym after a short lay off for Thanksgiving holidays. Alderman seemed to be well pleased over the squad's showing to date, but he was a little wor ried about 1948 Captain Ray Avant's back injury. Avant will probably, miss the intra-squad tournament a couple of weeks from now because of this injury. The doctor has given or ders for him to stick to light work 'outs. Harry Tempi, 155-pounder from Florence, has continued his fine showing. Alderman rates him one of the best prospects on the team, conparable to conference champs Avant and Pete Campassi. In addition to Temple, the Birds have several other promising new comers.
