The biggest news in the camp
was the return of Heavyweight
Bill Rutledge to the team. He had
been suffering from. a football in
jury and had announced that he
wouldn't report for the team be
cause of it. However, yesterday
he said he was definitely out for
the team. His return relieves the
heavyweight weakness tremen
dously.
Joe Stringer will fight at 126,
Pete Campassi at 130, Grady Decell
and Charlie Bernstein at 185, Cap
tain Ray Avant and Red Douglas
are listed as 145-pounders. Avant
had been moved up to 155, but the
surprisingly good showing of
Harry Temple caused Alderman to
change Avant back to 146.
Sylvester Lewis, ineligible last
year, has looked exceptionally good
in the 165-pound weight. Lewis is
Carolina's hope to stop Dale Mat
thews of The Citadel. Jim Brigg
man, who fought in this class last
year, is back to battle Lewis for
the spot.
Elerson Fowler, 135-pound con
ference champ, Bob Dockery and
Roy Skinner, who were heavies last
year, are lost.
Frank Singleton has shown
flashes of brilliance during the
first few sparring sessions. He
may turn out to be the surprise
package that Alderman has been
looking for in the 176-pound class.
Chris Hitopoulos, who fought at
118 pounds last year, is manager
of the team.
