Wadiak Is Biggest Offensive
Threat With 73-Yard Sprint

Homecoming Day for South Caro
lina's Gamecocks Saturday, out
classing and defeating them, 19-7
in the rain at Carolina Stadium.
The offensive-minded visitors led
Carolina, 19-0, until Steve Wadiak
scooted for 73 yards to score late
in the final quarter.
Wadiak was the whole offensive
show for Carolina, gaining 102
yards through rushing, although
the team's totals showed only 94
yards by rushing. . The freshman
scootback also played an outstand
ing defensive game.
Maryland opened the scoring in
the second period with Vic Turyn
passing to end Jim Betz for the
touchdown and the only completed
Maryland pass of the game. Turyn
scored himself later in the quar
ter picking up a fumble and going
over. A Carolina fumble on the
20 set up this touchdown.
In the second half, Maryland
again capitalized on a Carolina
fumble, end Elmer Wingate re
covering Ashley Phillips' bobble in
the end zone for a tojjchdown.
Hagan's passing in the first
quarter gave rise to hopes of an
upset to the CaTolina fans, but the
hard-charging Maryland line soon
stopped them. After this, Wadiak's
running appeared to be Carolina's
only hope.
Defensively, guards Roy Skinner
and Dave Sparks were outstanding
for Carnlinin in the line. Rae Har
rison, Ed Pasky, and Wadiak were
the big men on defense in the
backfield.

3:30 P. M. and exercise their grid
iron talents. No admission will
be charged.
Individual prizes will be award
ed in each of the six events, punt
inff for distance and accuracy,
passing for distance and accuracy,

compiling most points will be
named the "Triple-Threat" foot
baller of the non-varsity men of
the campus.
Each "quarterback will get three
tries for each of the punting
events, three for each passing, the
same for kick-offs, and ten tries

Tulsa, who at the beginning of
the year was scheduled to play
in the Delta Bowl on New Year's
Day, has had a rough season all
along. It has been so rough, in
fact, that two weeks ago Tulsa au

the bowl agreement. In the seven
games played thus far by the Hur
ricane, the nearest they could come
to victory was a 13-13 tie with
Wichita, Oct. 30. Tulsa's latest
defeat came last Saturday when
the team took a 19-0 licking at the
hands of Oklahoma A&M.
Brothers has 19 lettermen back
from his 1947 Missouri Valley
Conference championship team.
Among them are quarterback Joe
Finks, a fine passer and runner
who ranked seventh in total of
fense in the country last year, and
Jimmy Ford, smallest man on the
team at 155 pounds, but the big
gest offensive threat. Beginning
his fourth year as a first string
back, Ford is out to top his 1947
record of 303 yards gained in 73
shots at the line. Ford was also
Fink's leading aerial target, pick
ing up 17 of the quarterback's
passes for 276 yards.
At center there is Billy Joe
Cagle, outstanding defensive man
and excellent line-backer. Guards
wvho have seen plenty of rugged
duty so far this year include Bill

Virginia, and Maryland.
