Varied Jobs
By JANE GERARD
Mrs. Ann Ridgely Platt, journal
ism major at' the University of
South Carolina, has just claim to
the title, "Jill of all trades."
She has been everything from a
garage mechanic to a worker in
the Schenley Distilleries and has
Aequired i knowledge of such
things as life in a ten cent store,
the right and wrong way to plow
a field, the troubles of a ecre
lary in a fish house, and what
eIvery restaufrnt waitress should
know.
Mrs. Platt's theory has 'een
when one job gets monotonous,
move on to another. Last year
when she was married to a per
,oi whom she came to know at
the university she was not ready
to settle down. As Mrs. Platt
said. "It just means that the next
Lime I get the wanderlust I'll have
someone to travel with."
Horn in Pennsylvania Mrs. Platt
loes not ea!l any one state her
ionie, for she has lived in 26 of
them. In addition to her travell
ing over so much land in the Unit
Ld States, she helped with furCe.
in the air and on the sea while
eiving in the navy. Whil s
tioned as an airplane mechanic at
P11ensavola she edited the Naval
Reserve paper, along with paint
ing scenery, acting in the plays,
und selling ads for the local
theater. When she was editing
the paIperl she realized the inade
riLiaCy of her vocabulary. So back
to school she went, and in due
time site reached the University of
South Carolina.
Now keeping house for her hits
bImnd and attending classes. Mrs.
I'latt plans to go into newspaper
work aftei g,raduatioii. But with
Artistic talent.; and knowledge that
)nee made her secretary to a naval
,omimander, her future life mayV
nclude any of the few jobs that
re left for her to tackle.
