By winning the game Clemson
earned possession of the gold tea
leaf, annually presented to the
winner of the Carolina-Clemson
game by the Blue Key soci;ties of
the two schools.
The Tigers scored their first
touchdown earlier in the final
quarter after recovering Bishop
Strickland's fumble inside the
Carolina ten-yard line.
After two line plays carried to
the three, fullback Fred Cone
started for the center of the Caro
lina line, turned as he was being
tackled, and tossed a lateral out
to Carol Cox, who went into the
end zone untouched. Miller's place
ment was no good and Carolina
led, 7-6.
The first half was predominant
ly Carolina with freshman half
back Steve Wadiak doing some
fancy broken-field stepping for the
Gamecocks. Midway the first
period, Wadiak took a lateral from
quarterback Bo Hagan, eluded sev
eral tacklers as he started around
right end and twisted into the
Clemson secondary for a 43-yard
gain. Three plays later, Hagan
flipped a perfect pass to end Red
Wilson for the first touchdown of
the game. Pickett's placement was
good and Carolina led, 7-0.
After that Carolina threatened
to score several times but couldn't
get the ball across the Clemson
goal line. They moved to the Tiger
25 in the second quarter, but a
field goal attempt by John "Toe"
Tominack failed. In the fourth

recovered.
Clemson Drives
Clemson put together a sustain
ed drive in the second quarter but
Bobby Gage fumbled and Harry
Deloach recovered in the end zone
for Carolina. Clemson had another
chance when Deloach's fumble was
recovered by a Tiger on the Caro
lina 20. The strong Carolina line.
stopped this try short, however.
Quarterback Bo Hagan, a sen
sation as a freshman but disap
pointing last year and the early
part of this year, played his best
game in two years. His ball-han
dling was smooth and he completed
five of the ten passes he attempted.
Halfbacks Bishop Strickland,
Harry Deloach, and Stevd Wadiak
were the principal ground-gainers
for the Gamecocks, with Strick
land, particularly, being called up
on repeatedly by quarterback
Hagan.
In the line, Ed Dew, Bill Estes,
Cecil Woolbright, and Red Wilson
played outstanding defensive ball.

Boxing Team
Begins Drills
Last Monday
Carolina's boxing team, runner
up in the Southern Conference
tournament last year, opened
drills this week with a squad
that shows promise of being the
best in the school's history.
Ray Avant, voted the outstand
ing boxer in last year's tourna
ment, returns this year seeking
national honors to add to his con
ference title of last year. He will
fight. at 155 this year.
Pete Campassi, 125-pound con
ference champ last year, returns
to fight in the 130 bracket replac
ing last year's champion, Elerson
Fowler, who did not return to>
school this fall.
Sylvester Lewis, a lad with dyna.
mite in both fists, will step into
the 165 slot for the Gamecocks
to challenge the Citadel's Dale
Matthews for his title in a match
that should be the best of the year.
Lewis was on the Carolina cam
pus last year but was ineligible for
varsity competition.
Another ineligible last year who
has an excellent chance of being
a conference champ this year is
rugged little Grady Decell, who
will fight at .135.
Joe Stringer, Red Douglas,
Fletcher Dean, and Jim Briggman
also return from last year's squad.
Bill Rutledge and Roy Skinner are
still in school but may choose to
devote their time .exclusively to
iootball.
