Hypatian to Award
Cup to Outstanding
Member Each Year
The Hypatian Literary Society
voted to award annually an en
graved cup to the member who
contributes most in carrying forth
the purposeg and ideals of the
Society.
This girl will be selected from
the Society by a committee com
posed of the officers, three mem
bers, and faculty advisor, Mrs. El
lerbe, who will serve as chairman.
The Hypatian Literary Society
will give a tea November 3rd from
5-6 in Sims Lobby in honor of
other campus Literary Societies.

Fall 'Warm Up'
Debating Tourney
To Be Held Here

The Carolina Forensics fall
"warm up" debating tournament
will be held on the campus No
vember 11, 12 and 13. Guest teams
from many Southeastern schools
are expected to attend.
The debates will center around
national debate and discussion
questions for the year: "Resolved
that the Federal government
should adopt a policy of equalizing
educational opportunity in tax
supported schools by means of
annual grants." The discussion
question is "How can civil liber
ties be guaranteed to all those
living In the United States"?
The tournaments will be held
during afternoons and evenings at
Drayton Hall and in the Literary
Society rooms.
Some who are to participate in
the debate are: James Simmons,
Albert Watson, Gene Rogers, Bill
Scott, Harvey Golden, Earl Vines,
Barbara Cloyd, Jean Strother,
Woodrow Stevenson, Irene Krug
man and Barbara Derrick.
Any men or women interested
in debating may see Prof. Merrill
C. Christophersen any afternoon
between 3 and 6 o'clock in Dray
ton Hall.

Dean Bradley Sees
Columbia's New
President Capped

Dean Francis W. Bradley, of
the faculty and foreign language
department at the university, was
recently in New York City as of
ficial delegate of the university at
the installation of Gen. Dwight D.
Eisenhower as president of Co
lumbia University.
Bradley had some difficulty
finding his way around the city.
He stopped at a subway station
booth and asked the young lady in
charge for directions.
After talking to her he started
down the stairs. The young lady
seeing him going In the wrorag di
rection rushed down the steps,
stopped him and told him which
way to go.
For New York this was a re
markable occurrence. Dean Brad
ley's courtly manners and digni
fied bearing must have made an
impression even in the hurly-burly
of a crowded New York subway.

On Received Mail
All stlidents are urged to notify
persons with whom they corres
pond of their correct box numbers
and request that this box number
be put on all mail, Joe Lawrence,
university postmaster, said this
week.
The correct box number on let
ters especially, will facilitate the
handling of the huge volume of
mail that the post office receives
daily and also minimize the
chances of mail being put in the
wrong box in cases of similarity of
names.
There are also approximately
300 boxes that have yet to be as
signed, Lawrence said. Students
have been requested several times
to come by and pick up their box
assignments but many have been
lax in doing so. Every student en
rolled in the university is auto
matically assigned a box as soon
as his registration is completed.
