Valentino Movie Shown By Film Society Monday "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse," starring Rudolph Valentino, was the film substituted for the originally scheduled "Beau Geste" Monday night on the Uni. versity Film Society program. The audice went to see the picture starring Ronald Colemar but was told a delay in returning the film to the Museum of Moderr Art in New York made a showing of "Beau Geste" impossible. Membership for the entire series is required for admittance, but since many of the regular members were absent and the weather was bad, a number of other people were admitted. "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" was the film that started Valentino on his way tc stardom. Until this picture in 1924, Valentino had been a bit player. With its release, Valen. tino became an overnight sensation, One of the highlights of the pic ture was the dancing of the Tango, which until then had never been filmed. Another bit player who was get ting his start in the picture was Wallace Beery. This convention will be attended by stu dents from -every college in the state, and the university is ex pected to have a large delegation present. All Baptist students desiring to attend the convention are urged to contact one of the members of the Carolina BSU and make their reservations. The registration fee is $1.00 and lodging will be provided by the First Baptist church of Anderson. All classes will be officially ex cused for those attending. Enrolhieit Breaks Law School Record The law school at the university began its 80th year this semester with 310 students, the largest en rollment in its history, Dean Sam uel L. Prince, said last week. This is an increase of about 25 students over the 1947 fall term. The largest enrollment before the war was 139 students in 1940. Classes started Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1948. Formal opening exer cises were held at 11 a. m. To Meet Univej By JAMES TODD When Fred Brison's father was walking three or four miles through the woods and around the bend-to the little red school house near the turn of the century he probably never dreamed that his son, a pharmacy senior at the Uni versity of South Carolina, would be making a daily trip of 114 miles to get to school and back 50 years hence. This is the seventh semester Brinson has driven the round trip of 114 miles from his home at Bethune, S. C., to the university. When he graduates in January he'll have 1,818 driving hours or 75 full days of driving for which he will receive no credit. During this time he will have driven ap proximately 100,000 miles. Few students who live on the campus can boast of a better at tendance record than Brinson has acquired since he entered school in June 1946. Although he has had eight o'clock classes every semester except one, he has never been tardy. For these classes the alarm clock in the Brinson home is set for 5:30 a. m. Besides his regular schedule at school he works 40 hours' a week managing a drug store in Bethune. With all this he still finds time enough to study to have a 1.6 grade-point ratio in his academic work. * When Brinson started the Fall semester in September '46 he bought a new Chevrolet for the daily trips. After 18 months and 61,000 miles he bought a 1948 Chevrolet which now has 23,000 miles. Le says he has had no ma jor mechanical trouble with either cai--just, preventative mainten ance. His wife Is the former Margaret Truezdell of Bethune and they have a 18-month-old daughter. Once while driving to school, Brinson saw tjat his car's speedo meter wouldn't reach the custonl ary 55. It would stop at 45 and rest there. At first he couldn't imagine what was wrong, but an soon as he remembered that his wife had used the car the preceding afternoon he thought he knew. When he returned home that after noon he took the car to the garage and had the governor removed. Brinson graduated from Miami high school, Miami, Fla., in 1933. After attending North Georgia College, Dahlonega, Ga., for two years he received an appointment to West Point in 1936. Failing to pass the physical, he left West Point after three weeks and en listed in the army. During his ten years in the army, five as an en listed man and five as an officer, he held every rate and every rank to Major, with the exception of Warrant Officer. He served in the Panama Canal Zone from 1986 to 1938. The years 1943 to 1946 found him in Eng land, France, and Germany. Com mander of an ordnance company while in England and France, he became battalion commander upon moving into Germany. When he received his discharge in April, 1946, he had lost his previous in terest in the army.
