Three, men are casualties from
last week's game and practice ses
sions and will be out of tonight's 4
contest. Fullback Bill Rutledge, -t
who also missed the Newberry
game, halfback Ernie Lawhorn,
and guard Pete Lane will sit this
one out.
Furman turned in a surprising
10-7 upset against Washington and
Lee and is ready to give the Game
cocks a rough evening. Coach Bob
Smith features one of the South's
top kickers in Paul Stombaugh, 1
who averaged 45.7 yards per kick a
last Saturday with three of them
going out of bounds inside the a
Washington and Lee ten-yard line.
The passing combination of
George Pruitt to All-State end
Tom Wham is always a dangerous 9
threat. Wham is considered an v
excellent prospect for All-Southern 0
honors this year. Defensive stand
outs for the Baptists are Wham, C
Captain Sonny Byrd, and veteran d
tackle "Punchy" Thornton.
Carolina will again bank their c
hopes on a powerful line and the L
finest array of backs seen at a T
South Carolina school in years. L

Known all over the south as a

Baskin, former holder of the

The team, the first frosh team
since the pre-war days, has been
working out at university field
and will continue its practices here
while the varsity uses Melton
field.
Probably the most outstanding
ball player on the squad is big
John Boyle, 215 pound quarterback
from Brooklyn, N. Y. Boyle
handles the "T" and he is an ex
cellent passer. The big boy-he's
6 feet 4 inches tall-is very fast
for his size and he has amazed
football fans during practices with
his amazing passing ability.
Another promising prospect Is
Tom Woodlee from Chicamauga.

Woodlee is a fine runner and
kicker and is may be the spark
plug for the frosh this year.
But the freshman backs would
be helpless without the aid of a
strong line. The Biddies' forward
wall averages around 192 pounds
and its not slow either. In a f if
teen minute scrimmage against the
varsity several weeks agq the
frosh held the first string of the
varsity to a 6-6 tie after 15 min
utes of play. The frosh line re
peatedly tore through the vet
erans' defense and showed surpris
ing speed and agility for its
weight.
