There are 873 new students,
which inaicates a drop of 377 from
the official tabulation of 1250 en
rolled for the 1947 fall semester.
Of the new students, 472 are fresh
men and 401 transfers. Enrollment
in the law school is approximately
300.
Due to the addition of the
twelfth grade to South Carolina
high schools, the freshmen class is
considerably smaller. This made it
possible to accept more out-of
state students, Needham said. t
Crowded conditions at the uni

by the great influx of veterans,
has necessitated limiting the en

Smith Regrets
Abrupt Halting
Of Street Dance
An apology for the abrupt dis
continuing of the Delta Tau street
dance on the steps of McKissick
library last~week, was pre:ented to
the student body and the sorority
by President Norman M. Smith
Wednesday.
The dance began at 8 p. m. Wed
nesday and was scheduled to end
at 12 p. i., but was halted by the
night watchnan around 9:30 p. 1
m. after students living in the cam
pus dormitories near the library ]
had complained to the president I
that the noise interrupted their
study.
By unanimous vote last Thurs- t
day, Student Council requested an
apology froim the administration
to the members of the sorority.
Jim Thomas, senior class president ,
and author of the motion asking
this action, explained that the
dance was registered in Anril and
was publicized before the night,
giving opportunity to halt it then.
The president's statement fol
lows:
"The university made a mistake
in authorizing a mid-week dance
to be held on the campus.
"It was something that had never
been done before,.
"During the dance numerous
complaints wero naturally made,
objecting to the music and noise
which distracted the 'students in
nearb)y dormitories from study. As
a result, it wvas necessary to have
the music and loud-speakers si
lenced.
"I wish the student body to know
that the members of Delta Tau
sorority complied fully with regu
lations for icheduling their dance
and that I regretted very much
having to call the dance off."
