Spring, 1948, began at Carolina
in the cold early-morning lines of
registration. Students, 4,200
strong, queued up for two days
and enjoyed the old tradition of
complaining and griping about the
inefficiency of the registrar's of
fice, but eventually all weathered
this, the only period in the year
when life at Carolina is harder
on the feet than on the head and
the bunionless one is happier than
the brainless one.
Then, the classes. Puffy eyes
peered through microscopes at 8
a. ni. and nodding heads rested on
notebooks during soporific history
lectures, but all Carolina settled
down to the realization that, after
all, this was what we were here
for. Examinations seemed a long
way off then.
Ray Avant won the Southern
Conference boxing crown in the
1.15-pound class, as squads from
Maryland. The Citadel, Clemson
and Carolina fought for the title
in the first conference tourney
held at Carolina since the war.
The Gamecock squad took second
place with The Citadel winning
top honors.
Pi Beta Phi joined in the social
whirl with its formal in the Jef
ferson hotel in early April. Stu
dents donned formal clothes for
affairs sI)ons4red by the Cotillion
club, Phi Sigma Kappa, Sigma
Chi. Alpha Tau Oniega, Lambda
Chi Alpha and then the balls at
graduation. , Evening life began
to wear the new look.
