Cock And Bull By VAN NEWMAN Sports Editor LIU :1:3rl . :!.4;: Scooter Rucks is currently the athlete of the hour on the Carolina campus. The Scooter's record-breaking efforts in the state meet last weekend practically handed the Game cocks the title. There is an art to the running done by the champs of the cinders and lucks is a perfectionist at that art. Scooter should balance a laundry bundle on his head like an old negro mammy some day when he goes into his "float" to demonstrate his smoothness. His legs move like a vibrating pendulum, smooth, even, but fast. Three freshmen were also crowned state champs and may be able to fill the gap left by the graduating Scooter. Rupert Drews, in addition to winning the 100-yd. dash, fin ished second to Rucks in the 220. Freshmen Wayne Brackett and Ed Coleman also took a first and second apiece. Coleman missed the state record in the shot put by a scant two and a half inches. Pole vault honors in the state meet went to Clemson's Jerry Brown in an unusual competition between two broth ers, representing two bitterly-opposed schools. In the dual meet three weeks ago between Carolina and Clemson, Gene Brown of Carolina defeated his older brother with a jumP of 12 feet. Last weekend Jerry successfully defended his state title against his kid brother with a .ump of 13 feet, only 4 inches short of the state record. BIG FOUR In North Carolina the principal interest in college base ball'centers about the Big Four, composed of Duke, Wakc Forest, North Carolina, and N. C. State. The outcome of the Big Four race greatly overshadows state and conferencE titles. Competition is fierce and the quality of play very good. This small league stimulates the coaches in theii interest in their teams and improves the play. A learue such as this in South Carolina might be the ideal thing to point out the fact to the baseball-con scious fans that there are college baseball teams in the state. Local newspapers have been giving the Carolina teams far less space than even the Tuesday nirht wrestling matches. Although baseball is reputedly the national pastime, college baseball takes a back seat to track in South Carolina, principally because of the lack of interest which, in turn, is up rodurt of the lack of heated rivalry and the general lack of quality in play. A Big Four League in South Carolina including Carolina Clemson, Furman, and the Citadel might put baseball bacl on the major sports agenda, where it very certainly belongs Baseball and other sports at Carolina need more interesi devoted to them to parallel the conditions at the othei schools with whom we wish to compete. Now is the time if ever, for Carolina to attempt to go for the big leagues Stimulated interest in baseball, tennis, track, and golf coulk put Carolina on a much higher athletic plane with a mini mum of expense. Promotion is needed rather than a larg4 outiay of cash to improve maiers. The football setup al the university is progressing steadily under Coach Re) Enright's program of emphasis on football. But the othei sports should not be neglected. These teams, too, bear th4 name of Carolina and are a reflection of the school. OTH ER SPORTS Carolina added the state golf and track championships t< their growing list of trophies last week.
