Jean Hill, rising senior from Darlington, succeeds Gilliam as managing editor, and George W. Shelor of Anderson replaces Har ry Hiott of Columbia as business manager. Gilliam has served as managing editor during the spring and pre viously has been news editor and feature editor of the paper. He is a member of Blue Key, Kappa Sigma Kappa, Pi Epsilon Nu jour nalism fraternity, the Honor Board and the YMCA. Miss Hill has been news editor for the 1948 spring term and is a member of Pi Beta Phi, the Europhynean literary society,,the YWCA, Pi Epsilon Nu journalism fraternity, and is second vice-pres ident of the student body. Succeeding Miss Hill as news editor is James Sheridan, senior from Columbia. He has served as campus editor this semester and is a member of Sigma Chi. Other editors include Kenneth Baldwin of Myrtle Beach, succeed ing Sheridan .as campus editor; Van Newman of Sumier, sport editor; Ruth Newell of Moncks Corner, succeeding Norine Corley as society editor; Gladys Johnson, of Charleston;. succeeding Tili Young of Charlotte as copy editor; Jane Dowe, of Norfolk, Va., feature editor; and Marguer ite Webb of Columbia, exchange editor. Frank Harden, program director of Columbia's station WIS, was principal speaker at the banquet at which the new staff members were introduced. University Singers Give Joint Recital In Chapel Monday Gloria Allison, soprano, and John Nelson, baritone, will be presented- in a joint recital Mon day at 8:80 p. m. in .the University Chapel, Hugh Williamson, head of the music department, said yester day. The program will include "Lord, Almighty God, from 'Moscow Can tata'" (Tschaikowsky) and "Bois Epais" (Lully), sung by Nelson; and "Allerseelen" (Strauss), "Beau Soir" (Debussy), and "Ariette" (Vidal), sung by Miss Allison. Also 'La Calunnia, from 'Il Bar biere di Siviglia'". (Rossini) by Nelson, and "Air Des Bijoux, from 'Faust'" (Gounod), "Lamplighter" and "The Street Fair, fromi 8ketches of Paris'" (Manning), by Miss Allison. Nelson will conclude the pro gram with "Zueignung" (Strauss), 'Melancholy" (Merikanto), "Pil grim's Song" (Tschaikowsky) and "Song of the Flea" (Moussorgsky). Columbia Attorney To Deliver Address At USC Graduation R. Beverly Herbert, Colum bia attorney, will deliver the commencement address at the university graduation exer cises June 2. Herbert, a native of The Plains, Va., attended the Rock ville, Md., Academy, and was graduated from the university law school in 1899. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, national honorary scholarship fraternity, has been a member of the South Carolina General Assembly, and a special circuit court judge. First Ai ie Day Hc Under I USC Debate Team Asked To England The university has been exten ed an invitation to send a deba ing team to England next sprir for a match with the Oxford tear according to Prof. M. G. Christ phersen, debate coach and facul advisor. The Oxford team debat here Jan. 5 before a capaci crowd in Drayton Hall. The invitation was included a letter from Sir Edward Boyl one of the debators visiting tf university. He wrote to convey tl unanimous thanks of the Oxfo: Union for the courtesy shown tl traveling team by American co leges and universities during tl 'winter tour. Injecting a personal note in the letter, Sir Edward wrote " I write this, I can see the fa of John C. Calhoun staring frow ingly at me from the wall of yo Caroliniana Library." The Engli team toured the entire camp during their stay. Final decision as to whether not the invitation will be accept has not been made.
