Carolina Plays Cock And Bull By VAN NEWMAN Sports Editor Coach Ted Petoskey and his baseball boys seem to have hit the skids after their most promising start in several years. The late innings against North Carolina started the Gamecocks on their way down and appeared to set them up for the two knockdowns suffered at the hands of the un deaconly Wake Forest outfit. The loss of Jim Pinkerton was the biggest blow. Runt Willis filled in well, but his hitting was far below the .471 average that Pinkerton boasted. Carolina should have won the second Wake Forest game. They teed off on Harry Nitcholas, the freshman pitching star who recently shut out Yale, the national intercollegiate champions. Going into the ninth, Bo Hagan still had things well in hand and was ahead, 6-3. A Wake Forest rally would have fallen short except for an outfield error that led to the disastrous tenth. But don't sell the Gamecocks short because of their show ing in the last three games. Pinkerton has been working out this week and may be able to go against Clemson to morrow. Captain Harry Parone is hitting again, slugging out six hits in 11 official times at bat in the last three games, including the home. run he blasted against North Carolina. The pitching was far from good against the North Caro lina teams. In spite of this, Coach Ted Petoskey's state ment that he now has the best pitching staff he has ever coached, still bears weight. Next year, things should be even bet'er. Every regular vill L: back with another year of very va;uable experience under his bet. This should be especially helpful to Pe toskey's young ieswn pitchers. TENNIS TEAM RECOVERS The tennis team was riding on the crest of a three-game winning streak when this column was written. Considering the hard luck that has plagued them since the opening match, they should be commended for this record. The morning of the Kalamazoo match, Captain Freddie Atkinson was declared ineligible. This caused the entire lineup to be changed just before matchtime. The Gamecocks didn't re cover from this blow until the match was over, but they haven't lost since. Perhaps the biggest bottlenecks facing the tennis team are the lack of first-class facilities and the lack of coaching attention. Hank Bartos is a very good football line coach, Along with Coach Rex Enright, he turned out a line last fall that Carolina students might well be proud of. But the fact remains that the tennis team is being neglected. When Atkinson was declared ineligible by the registrar's office, changes in the Carolina lineup were effected by Manager Bill Walters and the players. The tennis coach did not even get to the matches that afternoon until the last sets of doubles were being played. The coaching re ceived by the team is nihil. They learn the hard way through experience. The tennis court situation on the campus is a well-known one. In the first place, there are far from enough of them. And the ones that are available aren't kept in the best of condition. The lack of good tennis courts is only one of the insufficient minor sports facilities that the students are now beginning to cry out about.
