The second game ained out. Tennis Team Opens Against Kalamazoo The. Carolina tennis team will i open its 1948 season against Kala mazoo here at 2 p. m., Tuesday. The Michigan team has one of the better teams in the midwest and makes an annual tour of the South, meeting several teams in North and South Carolina. Kala mazoo last played the Gamecocks in 1947, winning 7-0. Western Michigan has been added to the Carolina schedule and will come here Wednesday, Coach Hank Bartos announced today. The main single matches and doubles will be played at the courts at the corner of McBryde college. Bleachers have been erect ed to accommodate at least 400 spectators and no admission will be charged. Ben Turner will probably be in the No. 1 spot for the Birds, with Fred Atkinson, a strong contender, at No. 2. Turner was the Game cocks' best in 1947, while Atkin son was No. 1 in 1946, but was not in school last season. Competition for the No. 6 spot on the team has been hot, but the 0, 4 and 5 posts have been prac Itically sewed-up. A. J. Smith and Ben Kilgo, both of last year's team will be at No. 3 and 4, while Theo Constant is holding down the No. 5 position. Bill Tyson, George Roth and Billy Woolbright are strong con tenders for No. 6. Atkinson and Turner will team up for the No. 1 doubles match and Smith-Kilgo will be the No. 2 com bination, with the third doubles conbinc yet to bc decded. Atkinson was elected team cap ~tain for this year. Carolina Coed Elected Officer of State WAA At Annual Meet The Woman's Athletic Associa tion will sponsor a softball tour nament to be run off the last of April according to Laura Rob erts, chairman. The tournament will be round robin with a team from each class participating. A girl from each class will be selected as manager of her class team, said Miss Roberts. Practice for the tournament will begin April 19. Exact date and time of the tournament has not been set yet. A tennis tournament for girls is also being sponsored by the WAA this spring. Chairman of this tournament is Elinor Hull. Those wishing to enter may sign the list on the Sims Bulletin board. Also posted on the Sims board are the eligibility rules for the tournament. The winners had 24 points and Sigma Alpha Epsilon finished third with 23. The hotly contested neet was not decided until the last race the 200 yard freestyle relay which Sigma Chi won, barely beat ing out SAE. Had SAE won, they would have finished first with 28 points. The other two entrants, Lambda Chi Alpha and Pi Kappa Alpha, were hardly in it as they finished last with one point each. Albert Munn, Sigma Chi, and Bob Tindill, Sigma Nu, tied for individual scoring honors with ten points each. Tindall took first Track Team Enters Florida Relays Next The university track squad will be one of 16 teams entered in the University of Florida Relays to be held in Gainesville, Saturday. Among the expected entrants from Carolina will be Ed Cole man, Bill Buck, Ben Badger, "Scooter" Rucks, Ray McKenzie, "Droopy" Atwell, and Wayne Brackett. The five relay races scheduled for the meet are the quarter mile, one mile, two mile, sprint medley, and one mile team race. Other events jncluded are the 100 yard dash, 120 yard high hurdles, 16 pound shot put, discus throw, javelin throw, pole vault, running high Jump, and the run ning broad Jump. Detailed Plans On Intramural Boxing Given Detailed plans for the in tramural boxing tournament were announced yester&ay by Joe Grugan, instructor of physical education.
