Flinn -a The Young Men's Christian Am sociation preceded this newspape on the campus by many yeari but it was not until the years o the twenties with the advent o R. G. Bell as secretary that it be came one of the most promineri activities at the university. The YMCA moved into Flin Hall in 1910, after having bee given its first secretary in 1901 the year of the advent of Th Gamecock. The paper in thoa days had expressed the need f a building on the .campus wher all students could gather and fe4 at home. The administration answere this by turning Flinn Hall, 4 that time a professor's home, ov( to the YMCA to fill this nee4 The 'building was directly behin the Caroliniana library then, b4 ing moved when the War Mem< rial building was constructed. Hometown newspapers wei kept in the parlors, and studeni dropped in to catch up on ti folks at home, and to read t1 number of magazines kept thei for their convenience. It becam the second home of most studen on the campus and the headqua ters for those liMng in the city. In 1919, a co-operative stoi was set up in the building. T paper reported that "candies, t baccos and other things for tl students' convenience would I kept in stock." The famous Fliz Hall pool tables were moved in that time, and a reading house b came a center for recreation. The program has sufficient va riety of appeal to nearly every Btudent at Carolina. Vespers ser vices have become a part of Caro lina traditions, with programs given at 7 each Sunday in the University Chapel for the wor ship and devotional outlet of the student body. The public affairs forum, bringing to the campus speakers of state and national note, is one of the facilities furnished by the Y. Students through the more recent years of Carolina history have spent many nights increas ing their knowledge of world af fairs 'under its leadership. Religious Emphasis Week has brought the religious and spiritual speakers to the campus since its first innovation. Meetings and seminars have been attended by scores who have now joined the body of the Alumni who appre ciate the place of the YMCA in Carolina life. Flinn Hall, and R. G.
