WELCOME
Today and tomorrow Carolina proudly acts as host to th4
Southern Conference boxing tournament. THE GAMECOCIR
welcontes the athletes, coaches and representatives of thq
three visiting schools and this column -hopes their stay wil
be enjoyable-but unvictorious.
The teams appear evenly matched and the finest boxinj
to be seet here in several years should be in store. Thi
Gamecocks are not at top strength but should give a gooc
account of thmselves. Although Ray Avant is a doubtfu
participant, Carolina might have two or three champions b3
tombrow night.
AN IRATE READER SPEAKS
Our erstwhile friend, Don Barton, has threatened u
with a libel suit in a recent letter to the "spotes editor.'
He writes, "You are a bum. Your page said that Lambdi
Chi had won two and lost two. We have won four and los
one, a startling upset. We are consulting our lawyers oi
whether to-bring a libel suit against THE GAMECOCK."
"An irate reader, Don Barton."
Now, Don, you know you can't sue THE GAMECOCE
Nevertheless, we are sorry that it happened. We won'
guarantee that it will be right this time, but it will b
difftrent.
ORCHIDS TO THE WAA
If there are no objections we would like to skip to i
more tangible subject-women. Sometime back we in
quired into the possibility of the girls having a basketbal
tournament, not knowing that they were making plans fo:
such.
They came through in "fine form" and the juniors woi
the title last week. If you missed the game, you missed i
good one as both teams were replent with some fine playere

A little luck and a first class exhibition of basketball lk
that piayed against Georgia could do the trick. N. C. $tat
still looks like the team to beat, regardless.
In the Georgia game, the Gamecocks really played up t
their capabilities and The Citadel game, except the fi
half, showed more of the same.
ON ALL-STATES
As usual the forgotten man was f,orgotten. Guard Stev
Trewhelia, who finished the- season second high scorer fc
the Gamecocks with 182 points, contributed a great deal t
the Gamecocks' success. His fine all-round play was to
often overlooked' and was both a spark and a steadying ir
fluence.
Wofford's Old Gold and Black hatched the following al
state: forwards, Bell, Furman and Dean, Wofford; cente
Seay, Wofford; guards, Hughes, Furman, and Pruitt, Clerr
son. It might be added that The Tigers' honor five include
Martin, Davidson, Seay, Riddle and Stroman. Pruitt wa
given only honorable mention by his own school paper.
The two offer quite a contrast. With no further conr
ment, we move on. Since we dlidn't see three of the state
teams play, this column will niot present any all-state tean
