Maxcy Lobby'
Fire Damage.
Under Repair
Repairs were begun this week
on the sections -of Maxcy lobby
and basement dumaged in last
week's fire.
The hole in the floor above the
bookstore is being covered by uni
versity carpenters and the walls
damaged by smoke are being re
painted.
The fire began from a smoul
dering cigarette in one of the
sofas in the lobby, according to
Columbia's fire chief A. McC.
Marsh. The blaze was discov
ered in the early morning and
firemen soon put it out.
Damage to the sofa, a total
loss, .was estimated at $200 and
to the building estimated at $1,
000. Walls in the lobby and the
switchboard room and the infor
mation section were badly smoked.
This was the third such fire in
Maxcy in the last two years.

Held Each Tuesday
In Sims Dormitory
A Lenten study course for girls
is to be held every Tuesday dur
ing Lent in Sims third floor study
from 5 p. m. to 6 p. m.
The first session was held last
Tuesday.- Mary Louise Gilland,
student representative for the
Canterbury Club of Trinity Epis
copal church was in charge. Miss
Gilland is using the book, Revive
Thy Church, Beginning With Me,
by the Rev. Samuel M. Shoe
maker, as a source for her dis
cussions. She says the book is
simple, vivid and has a wide ap
peal. It contains human interest
stories from lives of ordinary and
extraordinary men and women.
The editor's note says of the
book, "it aims to make our faith,
which is the greatest possession
we have, more potent in our lives
and to enable us to commend it
more effectually to others."
The theme of the church's pro
gram is evangelism and Miss
Gilland plans to carry this out in
the course.
