(Photo by Manning Harr SPOR TORAMA By DON BARTON MAYBE WE'RE LUCKY North Carolina State, which has one of the nation's to basketball teams, has a field house that seats 4,000, but student body numbering 5,300. Consequently, school off cials have had to split the student body into two group, allowing 2,650 to attend each game. That leaves 1,15 seats for faculty, press, and a few lucky enough to gai tickets. Kansas State, now the talk of the country in basketba circles, has an enrollment of 7,000. Its field house seats 3,001 Thus the story runs throughout the country-there's a acute seating shortage for basketball games. Carolina fac( the same problem, and, consequently, few general admissio tickets are sold for our home games. The students corr first. At the present, Maryland's boxing team is rated best i the Southern Conference. The three other schools havir teams are Clemson, The Citadel, and Carolina. USC is givE the best chance of unseating the Terrapins from the throne. Tonight the Gamecocks meet Maryland at College Par so if they have what it takes to lift the crown from t Old Liners, it should be shown, although the tournamei the last two days of February officially decides the char pions in each weight and the team champion. We haven't seen Maryland this year, but we have seen ti Gamecocks working out. What we saw, plus our confiden< in Jess Alderman has us convinced that Carolina will tal the Terps tonight and relieve them of conference hono: next month. TOURNAMENT HERE?? Four schools in the Southern Conference have boxir teams this year. They are Maryland, The Citadel, Clemst and South Carolina. The Southern Conference boxing tournament, which di cides the official championships is scheduled for Februar 27-28, but the place has not been decided. The University is midway between The Citadel and Clen son, and Maryland had the tournament last year, so it seen that Carolina would be ratedl high on the list of prospectis places this year. Our field house could be arranged to a commodate slightly more than 4,000 spectators for il event, and Columbia alone should be able to produce thi many interested fans. If the tournament should be held here, students, of cours could not expect to be admitted upon showing their activitii cards, as it is not a regular-season event, and the tourn; ment is not the property of any individual school. Studen should, however, and probably would, be given some so: of priority in obtaining tickets, perhaps a certain amoum of seating space being reserved for them. Carolina has a good chance to get this tournament her so we are looking to officials to make an attempt to geti if it would be best for the school. We can't see that would be anything but good for the University. HITOPOULOS vs. HITOPOULOS! Chris Hitopoulos, 1 18-pound boxer for the University < South Carolina, has a brother, Harry, that fights in the same weight for The Citadel. A bout between the tv brothers for rival schools would be a very interestir match .. . we can see the headlines now, "Brother Mee Brother." Bu,t it will never be that way. When Carolina meets TI Citadel on Feb. 13 (if that date has been agreed on at th writing) there will be- no bout between Hitopoulos and Hit< poulos. These brothers just don't want to face each oth< in the ring, nor do their parents want them to. Can't blan them one bit, either.
