Sylvester Lewis, 155 pounds, and
Grady Decell, 135 pounds, had
been ruled ineligible because they
had not been at Carolina one year
since leaving the University of
Mississippi.
The Gamecocks are in pretty
good shape, but Coach Alderman,
who saw the Terrapins defeat
Michigan State, says the Birds
will have to be at their best to
have a chance against Maryland.
Eight Gamecocks
Pete Campassi will fight in the
125-pound class. This Clarksdale,
Miss., product, who recently be
came the father of a baby boy,
will face one of the better fight
ers on the Maryland team.
Fletcher Dean of Orangeburg
will go in the 130-pound division.
Dean has improved greatly over
last year.
Elerson Fowler of Memphis,
Tenn., will be a strong contender
in the 135-pound class and should
fair well all season.
Ray Avant in the 145-pound
class is the Gamecocks' top con
tender. He is from Georgetown.
Frank Threatt is the Birds' 155
pound entry. He has developed
fast this season.
Jim Briggman, 165 pounds, of

lina's rougher fighters, a fast
starter.
Roy Skinner of Sumter will go
in at 175 pounds. Skinner bears
watching, is a hard hitter and fair

of Carolina has been named the
best blocker in South Carolina
football by sports writers and
coaches throughout the state and
will receive the William P. Ja
cobs trophy, offered each year to
the state's best blocker.
Harrison will receive the trophy
the latter part of January at
Durham, N. C., at which time sim
ilar trophies will be given to the
best blockers in the Southern and
Southeastern Conferences. Nick
Ognovich, Wake Forest back, will
receive the award for the South
ern Conference for the third suc
cessive year.
