A Present For Johnson (Or-She Really Fills A Stocking) (Photograph of Toogie Harris of Lamar by Manning Harris) By DON BARTON 'Twas the night before Christmas, as you might have guessed, And smilin' Frank Johnson had lain down to rest; His basketball players were holiday bound, So soon into slumber the mentor was found. The season was young and his squad was in trim, So Frank hoped that fortune would smile upon him. WVith care in the background and Yuletide supreme, He pulled tight the cover and started to dream; When Into the night air there came such a clamor, That Johnson arose from this slumberous drama; With the dash of a cager his feet hit the floor, He hurdled a table, then threw wide the door. At first there was nothing unusual to see, But soon appeared something as odd as can be; -Frank tried to ignore it but looked up again To sight a small sleigh pulled by eight tiny men, With a driver that startled our hero because The shape of things showed it was not Santa Claus. The driver (as hep cats would say) was a dame, That guided the charges and shouted each name, Now, Adams! Now, Martin! Cantore, Trewhella! On, Slaughter! On, Ekimoff, Szakasci and Talus! Be sure of your pivots and breakaway fast; In less than a moment this spettacle passed. But soon it was evident it had not gone, For back into view came this phenomenon; It streaked to the top of the house like a flash And lit on the roof with no sound of a crash; Then down thru the chimney presently fell The form of this curvacious Christmas time belle. As Frank closed the door and turned to observe He saw something that he would like to preserve; In spite of the looks of our feminine "Claus", What she held in her hand inspired the pause; It was something on which any basketball coach In thIs neck of woods would be glad to encroach. The thought that this object was destined to be In just his possession made Frank laugh with glee; He looked at the bearer, whose mischievous smile Would still make the best of us linger awhile, And wvondered how out of all those in his plight He had been chosen to have this delight. The pretty deliverer gracefully swung To the fireplace where Johnson's stocking was hung. Then as he hoped and his heart skipped a heat, He waited to see his ambition complete; For then in his stocking with brilliance profound Went the gift of all gifts, the CONFERENCE CR'OWN!! The comely sleigh-driver had nothing to say, But her manner assured that the present wpuld stay; Then ending this mission so magnificent Back up the chimney the courier went. She danced to the spot where awaited the sleigh, And fast as It came It went sailing away. But ore It was gone from sight Johnson could hear, "Merry Christmas, to all-and a Happy New Year!" Harrison N Player On Claud "Red" Harrison, fullback from Baton Rouge, La., was pre sented the Palmetto Theater tro phy for being selected by his teammates as the most valuable man on the Carolina football squad at a brief ceremony on the stage of that theater Wednesday night. The entire Gamecock squad was guest of the theater. Considered by Coach Rex En right, and many other coaches who saw him play, as the South's best defensive back, Harrison's all around play during the past sea son won the acclaim of the Uni versity. He was . named on the Associated Press All-South Caro lina first team and received hon orable mention on the All-South ern Conference selection. Harrison is a senior but has an other year of eligibility for col lege football. Much of Enright's ]offensive and defensive worry would be relieved by the return of his most valuable player. Dept. The university physical educa tion department is now offering a course in beginners swimmin under the direction of James - (Jimmy) Ratliff, Jr., instructor. Non-swimmers are urged to ' avail themselves of this opportun- . ity to learn to swim and at the same time obtain a credit in physi cal education. The course is open to veterans and. n6n-veterans. It was pointed out, however, that the, latter group must complete two semesters of physical fitness, re gardless of when they take swim ming.
