Kibitzer Reveals Terrifying Friends Playing'That Game' Auburn, Ala. - (ACP-) -- Since bridge is a favorite pastime around the old campus, let's dis cuss some typical players. There is the You Fool 'type. These are the self-appointed au thorities who have calculating machiries in their pointed heads. Most of their time is spent in leering at their partner from their fan of cards and slapping their foreheads and stamping their feet at everything you say. Answer their bid and you should have passed, don't answer their bid and you missed a slam. They can quote a Culbertson at length and give percentages like an insur ance salesman. The Bid and I'll Scream type are the ones who will usually let the bidding get to about the three level and then begin to put the evil eye on you. They hesitate be fore each bid, begin to look out the window, shake their heads, light cigarettes, ask for change, ask what time it is, kick over coke bottles and do anything else that will divert your attention from the cards. When they do these things you had better pass-un less you have missed your cue and they turn out to be the fol lowing type. The Don't Bid and I'll Scream type are the ones that bid and then begin to clear their throat. With this type you usually wind up at the four or five level with absolutely nothing at all, and then they see to it that you are the one who has to play it. After they have gotten you much too high and have laid down their hand, they get up and go out the door, turn right and then turn right again. Few who tread the brick walks f Carolina fail to come at some i me during their college career I the little office of R. G. Bell i Flinn Hall. His official title executive secretary of the 'MCA, but his unofficial capacity that of temporary "father" to s all. Every morning for 28 years with a few exceptions) this man as walked into Flinn Hall ready Dr a day of service to the stu ents. It is his job to run the 'MCA, but it is his belief that ince it is a students' organiza ion, the students themselves hould run it. One of his col magues in the office has termed Uis one of his measures for suc essfully guiding the program of he association on this campus. Father Bell believes that stu- i ents learn by doing, and that is 1 xactly what he lets them do. To e sure, he is always seated in he background ready to answer uestions, give much needed ad ice, and in general keep the ball olling the way it should roll. Religious Emphasis Week, which as just drawn to a successful onclusion, is his annual head che and his annual week of the ~reatest joy. The work of long reparation and effecting the roper spirit for this occasion is andled for the most part by com nittees of students and faculty, ut his guiding hand is behind t all. "Mr. Bell, what are we going o do about this?" "Father Bell, )octor So-and-so called about his ?" "Could you come to this ommittee meeting and sort of ret things started the right wvay?" Last year tii when so many veteran students vi were having trouble getting their ubsistence pay from Uncle Sam, 1e stepped in to arrange a loan ;ervice for the students. Through n -mall acts like this he wields a I eep influence on this campus, for a t is the little things done when su .hey are needed that the student - -emembers all through his days ere, and even outside the walls. And through it all, Bell has naintained the religious senti nent in the university Y that so - nany of the organizations on >ther campuses have forgotten. 'he Y, he has said, does not op irate to put Christian ideals into z student, b)ut to allowv the stu lent to acquire thenm by helping thers, and in this way helping himself. So, down through the years, Pather Bell has been just that for ll of us at Carolina, someone to whom we could turn for guidance, for~ help and for kindly advice. for Shoes that look like new visit ROBERTS SHOE REPAIRING SERVICE. 0 0 0 NEXT TO CITY FIRE DEPT. 1319 Sumter St. [MAS JOY >f bok toy lAS CHEER >Id beer lAS SPIRIT teer it .. . to: & PLAZA OF 5 POINTS" 5 Points enny Wants ew Facilities p or Sciences F< Tv I,ow that the university is $1,- . ,000 richer than it was, I hope ew science building will be one dent he first projects of the build expansion program," Dr. mest ies T.
