SPORTORAMA By DON BARTON Li...+=.i..s.i ..io.'.k. ,.=.H. i". w .,r w i"...-.w.... .:!i ziL .i...i ......i...... .... . .. i... i...i AND A GOODLY CROWD WAS THERE Now, as we are assured that the football stadiums at most Southern Conference schools will have cocoanut trees leading to their press boxes next season, and as the sun slinks slowly over the horizon, the spotlight at Carolina shifts quickly to the field house. The Block C club dance with Jimmy Dorsey and his or chestra helped to get the basketball floor in shape for the opener with Newberry Monday night, as Misters Martin, Cantore, Adams, Szakacsi and Trewhella, etc., appeared in good shape, except for the time that Martin was faked clean out of position during "Drumology." Adams' hook shot Jimmy Dorsey and his orchestra were snapped by Manning Harris as they played "Drumology" in the third quarter of the Block C dance. The couple necking in the foreground is unidentified. was under wraps for- the night, but Cy was working pretty smoothly under the goal at times. We saw Trewhella over guarding several times, and Cantore was a little rusty on his pivots, but otherwise the whole gang was clicking. This might be a bit off our b)eat (if you'd seen Droopy in action, you'd agree it was dlefinlitely sports!), but the Block C club made a big contribution to Carolina's social life by bringing Jimmy Dorsey here, regardless of the fi nancial results, or what a handful of skeptics had to say. We hope that this and other organizations will continue to try to put Carolina on par with other universities in the way of having top-notch orchestras here-no matter how futile it seems. True the GI Bill of Rights doesn't contain a clause to pro vide dance tickets-or beer or cigarettes-but those who did salvage that two or three dollars were treated to some swell music and about the most temptilatin' gathering of damsels we've seen in a long time. It was more than worth the time and money. Carolina and Columbia should be able to support dances with big-name bands; the Block C club is trying to give them a chance to prove it. Thanks, a lot, Bobby O'Harra, and all concerned. FROM POET TO HOME-WRECKER! About the dullest way we can think of to break up a happy home is writing poetry!! But, after our little jingle about the cheerleaders in the last Gamecock, we thought we'd done just that. We stated that the "Only one married was Meeks," and hardly had. the first girl blushed over "Pillow to Post," when head cheerleader Warren Abernathy had read our verse and started wondering what HIS WIFE would say to this "only one married" clause. Honestly, we didn't mean a word of it, but what could we do at 2 a. mn, when we were desperate for a word starting with "0". Maybe that's taking "poetic license" too far, when you try to substitute it for a marriage license, so we beg forgiveness, Mr. and Mrs. -Abernathy. (He carries a cane, too!) Cagers Veteran Team To Take Floor For Carolina Carolina will open a 22-game A basketball schedule at 8 p. m., Monday night against the Indians v of Newberry College in the USC S field house. Student athletic cards & will be honored. Coach Frank Johnson has not A announced a definite starting of lineup, but All-Southern Al Adams R will start at center, Henry Mar- E tin and Cy Szakacsi or Steve Trewhella will probably start at a1 guards, and Werner Talus and Phil Cantore at forwards. A week from today the Game :ocks meet their first Southern ,onference foe of the year, George Washington University, which is mupposed to have one of the better :eams in the circuit. After that iome game, the Gamecocks hit ;he road to meet Hanes Hosiery it Winston-Salem, N. C.,- and Bowling Green at Bowling Green, )hio, completing the pre-holiday chedule. A look at Intramural Football Intramural football teams show Ad improvement during the past week with several close, hard fought games, as teams began to )attle down the home stretch. All but three of the teams had com pleted half of their schedule as of Wednesday, when the games were rained out. The "Y" team has dropped out l and teams slated to play them are notified that they have been given a forfeit victory. One of the better games of the past week was between Tenement G and Tenement 3 which ended in a scoreless tie. Both teams went into the game undefeated and are still on top in league stand ings. Tenement 3 spent most of the game in Tenement 6 terri tory and had a touchdown nulli fied by an offside penalty in the second half. Scrimmage Game The Carolina basketball team defeated Fort Jackson, 77-28, in a practice game at. the field house Wednesday afternoon. Al Adams led the scoring with 16 points, Henry Martin, forward, was next with 18, while Phil Cantore, for ward, and Lou Proctor, forward, had 12 each. Most Valuable Player Be Known Wednesday The most valuable player on the Carolina football team dur ing the 1947 season will be pre sented a trophy on the stage of the Palmetto Theater Wednesday night. The player was selected by a secret ballot among the squad, and -the name will not be made public until time for presentation of the award. esterfield d find Satisfy." PICTURE NY With N< Tumbling Exhibit To Be Presented By Women's Class The women's tumbling class of the University will present a demonstration of this senester's work at noon Thursday in the gymnasium, it was announced by Mrs. Margaret Moses, instructor of the class. The demonstration is open to the public and will last 35 minutes. Athletic Passes Ready For.Faculty and Staff Faculty and staff members of the university are notified that their winter athletic passes are available at Coach Enright's of fice in the rear of the pool. The passes will be good for boxing and basketball. ::..:::*... . ewberry JV Basketeers Start Workouts A junior varsity basketball team at Carolina is shaping up under Coaches Fred Snoddy and Fred Lytle, and prospects are bright, especially as far as the team's defense is concerned, according to Snoddy. Robert Shipman, Buddy Sulli van, Louie Krul, Red Kite and Billy Bradford have looked good . in early practices, as Coach Snoddy works on the squad's offensive punch. * Others working out are Her man Ntyers, Squee Funderburk, Foster Marshall, Ed Stoudemire, Bob Rogers, Roger Ready, Chris Claussen, Charles Bernstein, Joe Faress, Greg Hitopoulos, Donald Swygert, Bill Fairey, Fred Bargi acchi, Brooks Harrison and Bill Dickey.
